(Dec. 17) -- Barack Obama might have some of his mojo back. At least The Washington Post's Charles Krauthammer certainly thinks so. In a column today titled "The New Comeback Kid," Krauthammer says the president not only scored a policy coup (he actually referred to it as a "swindle") with the tax package passed by the House last night, but that Dec. 6, the day the legislative deal with Republicans was announced, could mark the day things really turned around for Obama. Here's more from Krauthammer: Remember the question after Election Day: Can Obama move to the center to win ...

WASHINGTON (Dec. 13) -- President Barack Obama is praising a test vote in the Senate supporting the compromise tax plan he negotiated with Republicans. He says it proves both parties can work together. The president spoke at the White House on Monday after the Senate surpassed the 60-vote threshold it needed to advance the legislation toward final passage. A vote that would send the proposal to the House is expected Tuesday. Obama says the plan would help create jobs by providing 13 months of jobless benefits to the unemployed and by cutting payroll taxes to all workers. The president ...

(Dec. 2) - President Obama's bipartisan debt commission voted 11-7 Friday to approve a controversial plan to shave deficits by nearly $4 trillion over the next decade. That fell short of the 14 votes that would formalize its recommendations and send them to the House and Senate floors for an up or down vote. But Democrats and Republicans alike said there is substantial support for much of the plan and that it will lead to a solution to the nation's crushing debt. ...
(Sept. 3) -- As a dismal July jobs report is released, news comes from The Washington Post that the White House is "seriously weighing a package of business tax breaks ... to spur hiring." The news revamps an earlier debate in the blogosphere back when the cuts were somewhat more hazy and theoretical. Bloggers on the left and right are both welcoming the idea of putting a payroll tax cut on the table. Many also wonder: Why did this take so long? 'Too Late'? The Guardian's Michael Tomasky says that "these aren't bad ideas. Many liberals agree that a payroll-tax holiday in particular is useful ...

Extending Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans would pad the federal deficit by up to $36 billion next year, with most of that money going to millionaires, according to a congressional analysis released Wednesday. The nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation found that households earning more than $1 million annually would receive nearly $31 billion in tax breaks under the Republican plan to keep the tax cuts going, The Washington Post reported. The average millionaire would see taxes reduced by about $100,000 in 2011. The data will help fuel congressional debate over the tax cuts ...
White House Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag laid the groundwork in a conference call with reporters last week for the Obama Administration to drop one of its signature campaign promises from this year's budget. President Obama repeatedly promised during the campaign to enact a "tax cut" for 95% of Americans as part of his economic rescue plans. But now, as Congressional leaders scale back the president's $3.6 trillion budget proposal, the Administration appears unwilling to press for the tax relief the president campaigned on.Orszag told reporters in advance of President ...
