Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Welcome to our weekly roundup of the strangest, weirdest and most exquisitely bizarre news items of the last seven days. After scouring hundreds of oddities, we found a few that really rise to the top -- or sink to the bottom, as the case may be. With the exception of a story about dogs with fake IDs, all the rest of the stories seem to be sexual things, from kinky taxes to one man who donated his penis to a museum, and another who was less humanitarian with his own (to the dismay of his female patients). So enjoy the stories and we'll have even more for you next week. Behold the power of ...
WASHINGTON -- Leading congressional Republicans renewed their vehement opposition to tax increases Wednesday, as President Barack Obama prepared to put forth his new prescription for slow growth and national indebtedness. "Most people understand that Washington doesn't have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va. "We can't raise taxes. ... That was settled last November during the elections." Joining Cantor in appearing on morning network news programs, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Republican chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, ...
In a drastic move to cope with their state's $15 billion budget crisis, Illinois lawmakers have approved a bill that will temporarily raise the income tax rate by 66 percent. Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, has said he supports the bill and will sign it soon. Under the new measure, Illinois' personal tax rate will climb from 3 percent up to 5 percent, and the corporate tax rate will increase from 4.8 percent to 7 percent. Supporters say the plan will raise $6.8 billion a year and will be combined with tough limits on state spending. On Twitter, reactions to the bill have been mixed. For some, ...
MOGOSOIA, Romania -- Everyone curses the tax man, but Romanian witches angry about having to pay up for the first time are planning to use cat excrement and dead dogs to cast spells on the president and government. Also among Romania's newest taxpayers are fortune tellers -- but they probably should have seen it coming. Superstitions are no laughing matter in Romania -- the land of the medieval ruler who inspired the "Dracula" tale -- and have been part of its culture for centuries. President Traian Basescu and his aides have been known to wear purple on certain days, supposedly to ward off ...

Fiji Water, the supplier of the swanky "artisanal" water, announced today that it has shut down its operations in Fiji because of what the company calls "discriminatory" tax hikes in the remote South Pacific country. So soon, Fiji water won't be from Fiji anymore. Last week, Fiji's government raised the tax rate on companies extracting more than 920,000 gallons of water per month from one-third of 1 percent to 15 percent. Fiji Water is the only company that meets that description, and the bottler says the spike forced it to pull out of the country ...
WASHINGTON (Nov. 15) -- Lame-duck sessions are usually unpopular and unproductive. Nothing suggests otherwise this year. Seven weeks ahead of the GOP House takeover, hobbled Democrats and invigorated Republicans return Monday to Capitol Hill. Alex Brandon, AP Democrats and Republicans return to Capitol Hill on Monday for a post-election session of Congress. With change clearly in the air, more than 100 mainly Republican freshmen arrive to be schooled on the jobs they'll assume when the next Congress convenes in January. (July 23) -- A tax on fat? Marco Wanderwitz, a conservative member of parliament for the German state of Saxony, said it is unfair and unsustainable for the taxpayer to carry the entire cost of treating obesity-related illnesses in the public health system. James looks to make an estimated $17 million next season by signing with the Miami Heat. Factor in endorsement deals with companies including Nike, Sprint and McDonald's totaling approximately $40 million, and James may find himself saving an estimated $25 million in state ...
