For others, sheer luck changed lives in unexpected ways. And then there's the guy who made headlines by gulping down a few dozen hot dogs on the Fourth of July. But we're not here to judge. He set a goal, he reached it and that's what our list of 2010's winners is all about. So click through ...
(Nov. 15) -- Welcome to your 15 minutes of linguistic fame. When 31-year-old John Tyner protested being frisked at San Diego's airport, he used a phrase that is now sure to be recalled by millions of passengers waiting in line at TSA checkpoints nationwide. "If you touch my junk, I'll have you arrested," Tyner told security officials in reference to his genital area. Though certainly not the first person to describe his private parts with a word normally synonymous with trash (see: Kesha's "Tik Tok," if you must), the context of Tyner's warning and the reaction by the TSA are sure keep ...
(Sept. 7) -- Justin Bieber's place in the musical canon may be a matter of debate, but from an environmental standpoint, at least, he's on the side of the angels. Bieber is one of a number of artists -- along with Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and the Georgia indie-pop band Of Montreal -- to be designated an "Earth Saver" by a new app that measures a touring act's carbon footprint. The app, Earth Destroyers, calculates how many pounds of carbon dioxide an artist produces by touring. Using data from the tracking site Bandsintown, artists are classified as either good or bad for the planet depending on how ...
Every Crowe Has His Day Sunday, Sept. 5 marks the 18th anniversary of the worst day in Jack Crowe's career. In 1992, Crowe, then the head coach at Arkansas, lost to The Citadel, a Division I-AA school, 10-3, in the season opener. Crowe, 44 years old then, was fired the next day. On Saturday, as you probably know, Crowe's Jacksonville State Gamecocks overcame a 31-10 halftime deficit in Oxford to stun Mississippi, 49-48, in double overtime. Jacksonville State is an FCS school, the latter-day version of a I-AA program. While the victory can be hailed as redemption for Crowe, the 62-year-old ...
Just how did the turkey -- a bird native to North America -- become synonymous with thoughtless, annoying people, so often overstuffed with jive? Let's face it, some of our nominees for 2009 Turkey of the Year wouldn't be welcome at any Thanksgiving dinner. So, with no further ado, let's look at some of the year's most fowl personalities. AP Roguishly Raw: That ring you hear when your 15 minutes of fame are up must be a call from someone asking you to pose nude. Levi Johnston's offer came from Playgirl, and he promised the pictorial would be "tasteful." We now know that Johnston's ...
Three decades ago, when powerful directional microphones were becoming commonplace in broadcast reporting, a newspaper colleague of mine played the most remarkable tape recording for me. It was made during the fourth game of the 1977 World Series at Dodger Stadium and stars Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, at whom the mic had been aimed. ...
ABC News reporter Terry Moran set Twitter afire Monday with a bit of inside reporting on an interview that took place on another network: President Obama, Moran revealed on his Twitter feed, had referred to Kanye West a "jackass." "Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at the VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT's presidential," Moran wrote at 6:39 p.m. yesterday. The quote quickly spread across the social networking site until CNBC, whose reporter had been interviewing Obama when he made the comment, objected that it had come during an off-the-record portion of the ...
The NHL is kind of short on celebrity endorsers. Snoop Dogg has been an avid league supporter and Ducks fan and Christie Brinkley has done multiple commercials and appearances for the New York Islanders. Now, enter the newest addition, country music star Taylor Swift. Naturally, the commercial she filmed endorses the biggest country music city in the world -- Nashville. It's also kind of a neat concept. "Look what I brought home, ma! Can I keep her? Pleeeeease?"HT Forechecker ...
