(Oct. 20) -- Let's get one thing straight right away: The Boston Tea Party took place on Dec. 16, 1773. Opposing pundits across the blogosphere have been bickering over comments made by Sarah Palin at a rally on Monday in Reno, Nev. Palin told a crowd of tea party supporters that they shouldn't "party like it's 1773" because there is still much work to be done between now and the November elections. The 1773 party that Palin was referring to is, of course, the Boston Tea Party. Here is the video of Palin speaking: Palin's history is clearly accurate in this case. Unfortunately, the Boston ...
After being rescheduled this summer, the National Tea Party Unity Convention planned for next month in Las Vegas has been canceled. Barbee Kinnison, one of the organizers, sent an e-mail Friday to supporters saying it was with "deep sorrow" that she had to announce "the convention is just not going to happen," The New York Times reported. The event was to be sponsored by Tea Party Nation, a social networking site with the goal of bringing together the disparate grassroots conservative groups popping up across the country. But the convention was criticized by some in the Tea Party who ...
(Sept. 20) -- What happens in Vegas ... well, never mind. A prominent tea party group has abruptly canceled its plans to hold a convention in Las Vegas that was to begin Oct. 14, Washington Monthly and TPM report. Billed as the National Tea Party Unity convention, the event was sponsored by the Tea Party Nation, was to be held at the Mirage Hotel & Casino and was to feature such prominent speakers as Sharron Angle, Andrew Breitbart and Lou Dobbs. There is no longer any mention of the convention on Tea Party Nation's website, and when reached by phone, the Mirage Hotel had no booking ...
With just over two weeks to go before a planned Tea Party convention in Las Vegas, organizers have postponed the event, citing poor planning and the summer heat in Nevada for disappointing registration numbers. In an e-mail to supporters, Tea Party Nation leaders said the "unity" convention planned for July 15-17 would be rescheduled for fall, but new dates were not announced. Organizers said they hope holding the convention later in the year would create momentum heading into the November elections. It's not clear yet if Nevada's Republican nominee for Senate, Sharron Angle, would remain ...
Marvel Comics' "Captain America" -- about a superpatriot who fought Nazis in World War II and chased flag burners during the Vietnam War -- is one of the longest-running, best-loved comics in American history. But, Marvel recently apologized for having a story align too closely to the politics of the moment, Yahoo News reports. While infiltrating a right-wing, anti-government militia group known as the "Watchdogs," Captain America encounters mobs of what appear to be Tea Party protesters. In one scene, Captain America and his African-American sidekick, The Falcon, observe an anti-tax protest ...
(Feb. 8) -- Whether Sarah Palin -- or anyone else, for that matter -- becomes the de facto leader of the Tea Party remains to be seen. But there's no doubt that she was the face of the movement this past weekend. Palin was the star attraction at the first National Tea Party Convention in Nashville. Her portrait was on the cover of the program for the event, and she was paid a reported $100,000 to give the keynote address at Saturday night's closing dinner. The ex-governor of Alaska touched on the leadership question in her speech. "I caution against allowing this movement to be defined ...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – She had them even before she said hello. And she had them before she prefaced her much-awaited speech by paying homage to conservative hero Ronald Reagan on what would have been his 99th birthday. By the time Sarah Palin took the stage on Saturday, the last night of the first National Tea Party Convention, the room was already with her, anticipating each dig at the "liberal left" and shout-out to "everyday people" -- and rewarding her with repeated ovations. ...
(Feb. 6) -- Joseph Farah, editor of the conservative Website WorldNetDaily, opened his speech at the Tea Party convention in Nashville with jokes and questions about President Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship. To loud approval from the crowd, Farah said his dream is that if Obama seeks re-election in 2012, he won't be able to go to any city in America without seeing signs that ask, "Where's the birth certificate?" The fact that the rest of the media has declared the issue settled is proof, he said, that it's not. ...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The first press conference at the first National Tea Party Convention broke news about something that is not affiliated with the Tea Party movement -- much. Confused? So were reporters and some activists on Friday afternoon. Mark Skoda, media director of the convention, announced the formation of Ensuring Liberty Corporation (ELCORP), a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, and its soon-to-be-established political action committee, the Ensuring Liberty PAC. The PAC would allow people in the Tea Party movement and anyone else to contribute money that would be used to fund key races across ...
