Opinion: What's So Bad About Earmarks?

(Nov. 16) -- Few words are dirtier in Washington than "earmark." Soon-to-be House Speaker John Boehner has vowed to ban them. President Barack Obama has called for earmark reform. The chairmen of the president's debt commission say the practice should be eliminated. And on Monday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reversed himself and says he now backs an earmarks moratorium. Meanwhile, Rep. Darrell Issa, the California Republican expected to chair the House Oversight Committee next year, called Obama "one of the most corrupt presidents in modern times." He later scaled back his ...

Sean O'Keefe Recounts Surviving Alaskan Crash

(Oct. 22) -- Sean O'Keefe had no idea what had just happened. One minute he and his companions had been in the air, flying to a remote fishing camp in southwest Alaska. The next minute he sat bewildered, "spitting out shards of teeth." His first thought was for his 19-year-old son, Kevin. He had been sitting in the front of the 1957 DeHavilland float plane, next to the pilot. He called his boy's name, but got no response. "It was just surreal," the former NASA chief and Navy secretary told the "Today" show this morning. Next to him, former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was dead. So were four ...

From the Grave, Ted Stevens Endorses Lisa Murkowski

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski is out with a new ad, featuring footage of the late Ted Stevens endorsing her candidacy. The former Alaska senator died two months ago in a plane crash. Soon after, Murkowski lost her GOP primary bid for re-election to Tea Party favorite Joe Miller. The ad, first reported by Shira Toeplitz, is narrated by Stevens' daughter, who explains that immediately after her father's death, Murkowski decided not to run the ad "out of respect." Now that Murkowski is running a write-in campaign to keep her seat, Stevens' daughter explains she and her family want the ad to ...

Justice Dept. Lawyer, Part of Botched Ted Stevens Case, Commits Suicide

Nicholas A. Marsh, part of a Justice Department team of lawyers under scrutiny for possible misconduct in the botched prosecution of the late Sen. Ted Stevens, is dead by his own hand. Marsh, 37, killed himself sometime over the weekend, the law firm representing him confirmed to the Washington Post. No details were provided. Questions about the Justice Department not sharing evidence and witness statements with Stevens' defense lawyers are part of an on-going investigation of the prosecution's handling of the corruption case against the Alaska senator, which began under the Bush ...

Washington in 60 Seconds: Congress Plans to Campaign Now, Govern Later

Good morning, Capitolists! It's a busy day in Washington, but in the words of motivational speaker turned Vice President Joe Biden, "Stop whining!" And start reading about what's happening in the nation's capital, in the next 60 seconds. - Stuffing the Duck. Congress is back in business this week, but there won't be much business getting taken care of. Look for two votes each in the House and Senate before members head for the exits until after the November elections. That means they'll leave a lengthy to-do list for the seasonally plucked and stuffed lame duck session that will include (at ...

Sen. Ted Stevens' Prosecutor Reportedly Commits Suicide

(Sept. 27) -- The Justice Department is expressing condolences this morning following a report that a federal prosecutor who worked on the corruption trial of former Alaska Sen. Pilot Near Alaska Crash Site Says Clouds Were Low

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Aug. 14) -- A pilot flying in the area of this week's Alaska plane crash that killed former Sen. Ted Stevens and four others has estimated that clouds were as low as 600 feet at the time of the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board's chairwoman said Saturday. Chairwoman Deborah Hersman said at a news conference that that is well below previous estimates of between 1,000 and 2,000 feet. The pilot of the small plane also told investigators that visibility was between five to seven miles, she said. The cause of Monday's crash on a remote mountainside in southwest ...

Mystery Still Lingers Over Flight That Killed Ted Stevens

JUNEAU, Alaska (Aug. 14) -- The plane that crashed into an Alaskan mountainside and killed former Sen. Ted Stevens and four others was outfitted with an alert system that warned pilots of dangerous terrain. But National Transportation Safety Board chairwoman Deborah Hersman said that it's not known if the system was working just before the plane crashed Monday. The plane was also equipped with an emergency locator transmitter, Hersman said at a news conference in Anchorage Friday. When properly registered, it issues a distress signal to a control center via satellites and provides ...

(Aug. 13) -- Former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens loved to fly, and he paid dearly for it.
