The study finds that 60 percent of Jewish teenagers between the ages of 15 and 18 prefer "strong" leaders to the rule of law. It also finds that in cases where state security and democratic values conflict, 70 percent of teenagers believe security should come first. Most teenage siblings tend to share clothes and maybe even a family car, but one set of quadruplets from Wylie, Texas, shares something much greater: serious smarts. The Crowley quadruplets -- Moria, Alanna, Thomas and Patrick -- are 17-year-old juniors at Lovejoy High School who just happen to be extremely bright and gifted. The foursome have just been accepted into the prestigious high-IQ club, American Mensa, after scoring in the top 2 percent on a standardized test that qualified them for membership. In the process, the multiples have made history. Courtesy of Crowley ...
Police in Florida say teenagers they arrested as suspected burglars admitted to snorting the stolen cremated remains of a man and two dogs because they mistakenly thought it was cocaine. "It is definitely very odd to have them stolen in the first place," Marion County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jenifer Lowe told AOL News. "Then, what they did with them is just beyond bizarre, to me anyway." Lowe said the sheriff's office has all five teens in custody and suspects they were involved in 20 unsolved burglaries. Three of the suspects arrested Wednesday have been identified: Matrix Andaluz, 18, ...
Five teenage buddies gathered in a motel room outside of Miami for a birthday celebration have been found dead in what police suspect was a case of carbon monoxide poisoning. Police don't think any foul play was involved in the deaths Monday afternoon of the youths -- males between the ages of 16 and 19 -- who were in a room at the Presidente Motel in Hialeah, Fla. Firefighters found a car running in a garage located underneath the unit, and investigators say the five appeared to have died after being overcome by the exhaust fumes, The Miami Herald reported. "It seems like this is a tragic ...
Is abstinence the new normal? The teen pregnancy rate hit a record low in 2009, according to new data just released by the National Center for Health Statistics. The birth rate last year fell to 39.1 births per 1,000 teens, a decrease of 6 percent from 2008. What's keeping America's teens childless? Surge Desk takes a look at a few of the competing explanations. No one's having babies at any age American teens could just be emulating their older role models; hardly anyone had babies in 2009. Birth rates also fell for women in their early 20s and for women in their late 20s and early ...
(Nov. 23) -- In a video game battle of the sexes, game-playing girls might brutalize their male opponents, but in a boys-only battle of the wits, the game players could outscore other lads. A new study by a Yale psychiatrist finds that teenage girls who play games are more likely to get into serious fights and carry weapons, while adolescent boys who play games aren't more aggressive than other boys, according to a summary of the research in MedPage Today. Lead researcher Dr. Rani Desai, who published the study in the journal Pediatrics, hopes to convince people there isn't a ...
(Oct. 28) -- Obese teens and lean ones exhibit a key difference in brain composition that might explain either the cause of obesity, or further illuminate a health risk of carrying extra body weight. In a study of 91 teenagers, 54 of whom were categorized as "obese" according to the body mass index, researchers determined that obesity was related to the size of a brain region implicated in impulsive behavior and self-monitoring. Those regions were relatively bigger among leaner teenagers, and smaller in obese study participants. All the study participants were given questionnaires on their ...
(Oct. 28) -- Just five months after Silvio Berlusconi's wife divorced him over his alleged affair with an aspiring teenage model, Italy's prime minister has been accused of getting intimate with yet another young catwalk wannabe. According to reports in the Italian press, a Moroccan model known only as "Ruby" has told police that she had sex with Berlusconi at his villa in Arcore, near Milan, in return for a "cash gift." The 17-year-old, notes Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, has alleged that she was present at several private parties held by the prime minister last year and this ...
If you try to draw a line between hate crimes and natural human behavior, you'd better have a good eraser. On Sept. 22, violinist and Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi jumped to his death after video of a (gay) sexual encounter was secretly filmed and posted on the Internet, allegedly by fellow students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei. So far, Ravi and Wei have been charged with invasion of privacy, but some people are calling for hate-crime prosecution. My Woman Up colleague Mia Navarro quotes a New York Times commenter who says his students live in a technology bubble where they rarely encounter ...
Americans aged 16 to 19 face the toughest employment situation since the 1950s, according to job statistics released July 2 by the Department of Labor and analysis by employment experts, AOL's Daily Finance reports. The government's June employment statistics revealed that non-farm payrolls decreased by 125,000 jobs even as the U.S. employment rate inched downward to 9.5 percent. The unemployment rate for teenagers, however, is triple that: 29 percent, according to non-seasonally adjusted numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And in June, teen job growth sank to its lowest level ...
