Study: Young Israelis Leaning More Conservative

JERUSALEM -- A survey released today finds young Israelis are moving to the right politically, as peace talks with the Palestinians remain stalled and the Middle East erupts around them. The study finds that 60 percent of Jewish teenagers between the ages of 15 and 18 prefer "strong" leaders to the rule of law. It also finds that in cases where state security and democratic values conflict, 70 percent of teenagers believe security should come first. Teen's Anti-Bullying Video Brings Community Together to Help Parents

Bullying often takes place in the schools, but one expert says it's vital that parents help eradicate name calling, vicious gossip and violence by taking action at home. "Our mission as caring adults should be to help children navigate the often very treacherous waters of childhood and to help them get to the other side, to adulthood, as unscathed as possible," said S. David Bernstein. On Tuesday night, Bernstein, an expert in risk management, spoke to a crowd of parents at a synagogue in Westport, Conn. At the end of his presentation, he played a viral YouTube video that originated in ...

Teenage Quadruplets Make History With Admission Into Mensa

Most teenage siblings tend to share clothes and maybe even a family car, but one set of quadruplets from Wylie, Texas, shares something much greater: serious smarts. The Crowley quadruplets -- Moria, Alanna, Thomas and Patrick -- are 17-year-old juniors at Lovejoy High School who just happen to be extremely bright and gifted. The foursome have just been accepted into the prestigious high-IQ club, American Mensa, after scoring in the top 2 percent on a standardized test that qualified them for membership. In the process, the multiples have made history. Courtesy of Crowley ...

Police: Teens Snorted Ashes of Man, 2 Dogs Mistaken for Cocaine

Police in Florida say teenagers they arrested as suspected burglars admitted to snorting the stolen cremated remains of a man and two dogs because they mistakenly thought it was cocaine. "It is definitely very odd to have them stolen in the first place," Marion County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jenifer Lowe told AOL News. "Then, what they did with them is just beyond bizarre, to me anyway." Lowe said the sheriff's office has all five teens in custody and suspects they were involved in 20 unsolved burglaries. Three of the suspects arrested Wednesday have been identified: Matrix Andaluz, 18, ...

5 Teenage Pals Found Dead in Florida Motel Room

Five teenage buddies gathered in a motel room outside of Miami for a birthday celebration have been found dead in what police suspect was a case of carbon monoxide poisoning. Police don't think any foul play was involved in the deaths Monday afternoon of the youths -- males between the ages of 16 and 19 -- who were in a room at the Presidente Motel in Hialeah, Fla. Firefighters found a car running in a garage located underneath the unit, and investigators say the five appeared to have died after being overcome by the exhaust fumes, The Miami Herald reported. "It seems like this is a tragic ...

Why Aren't US Teens Having Babies So Much Anymore?

Is abstinence the new normal? The teen pregnancy rate hit a record low in 2009, according to new data just released by the National Center for Health Statistics. The birth rate last year fell to 39.1 births per 1,000 teens, a decrease of 6 percent from 2008. What's keeping America's teens childless? Surge Desk takes a look at a few of the competing explanations. No one's having babies at any age American teens could just be emulating their older role models; hardly anyone had babies in 2009. Birth rates also fell for women in their early 20s and for women in their late 20s and early ...

The Revised Concussion Rulebook: What It Means for Kids and Contact Sports

(Nov. 2) -- Concussions, no matter how minor the symptoms, need to be a top medical priority for young athletes, their coaches and their parents. That's the bottom line from a top medical advisory board, which Monday issued a rigorous new set of recommendations on the management of concussive injuries. After months of debate over the proper handling of concussions, especially among teenage football players, the American Academy of Neurology has published a position paper on the issue. What's the AAN's key point? That concussions can be lifelong injuries with incredibly serious implications ...

Could Obesity Be Caused by Extra-Small Brain Region?

(Oct. 28) -- Obese teens and lean ones exhibit a key difference in brain composition that might explain either the cause of obesity, or further illuminate a health risk of carrying extra body weight. In a study of 91 teenagers, 54 of whom were categorized as "obese" according to the body mass index, researchers determined that obesity was related to the size of a brain region implicated in impulsive behavior and self-monitoring. Those regions were relatively bigger among leaner teenagers, and smaller in obese study participants. All the study participants were given questionnaires on their ...

Suicidal Teens: Pimples, Not Prescription Acne Treatments, Might Be to Blame

(Sept. 16) -- Teens with severe acne are more likely to suffer suicidal thoughts compared with their clear-skinned peers, and scientists behind a new study think the link has less to do with prescription acne medications -- which have long been associated with suicide risk -- and more to do with the embarrassing pimples themselves. Acne-addled girls were twice as likely to contemplate suicide, and boys with acne faced triple the risk, according to a Norwegian survey of 3,775 teens, aged 18 and 19. Unlike previous studies on teen acne, this one polled participants in the general population ...
