Teleprompter Inventor Hubert Schlafly Dies in Conn. at 91

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Hubert "Hub" Schlafly, a key member of the team that invented the teleprompter and rescued decades' worth of soap opera actors, newscasters and politicians from the embarrassment of stumbling over their words on live television, has died. He was 91. Stamford Advocate / AP Hubert Schlafly, shown here in 2008, died last week at age 91. The Emmy Award-winning inventor was best known for developing the teleprompter. Schlafly died April 20 at Stamford Hospital after a brief illness, according the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, which handled the arrangements. A ...

Did Obama Really Use Teleprompters to Address Schoolchildren? Look More Closely

Did Obama Really Use Teleprompters to Address Schoolchildren? Look More Closely

President Obama spoke at Graham Road Elementary School in Falls Church, Va., last week, where he addressed about 30 sixth-graders. In a White House video from the event, Obama is shown flanked by two very visible teleprompters, at which he glances throughout the speech. Several conservative blogs posted the video along with snide comments about the president's inability to speak off-the-cuff. But according to a photo analysis and sources quoted by Sphere, the video is actually from a later part of the event, when Obama gave "closing remarks" to journalists. There are no children visible in ...

Joe Biden Sideswipes President Obama with his TelePrompTer

Joe Biden Sideswipes President Obama with his TelePrompTer

From The College Politico, here's another gem from loose-mandibled Vice President Joe Biden. His TelePrompTer blew over in high winds, prompting Joe to take a quick shot at the boss:"What I am going to tell the president when I tell him his teleprompter is broken. What will he do then." ...

Associated Press Jumps on Obama TelePrompTer Bandwagon

Associated Press Jumps on Obama TelePrompTer Bandwagon

The Associated Press, in a piece entitled "Analysis: Teleprompter telegraphs Obama caution," has added its voice to a growing, and unsupported, pile-on about Barack Obama's use of the device. From Yahoo:WASHINGTON – What kind of politician brings a teleprompter to a news conference? A careful one. President Barack Obama took no chances in his second prime-time news conference, reading a prepared statement in which he took both sides of the AIG bonus brouhaha and asked an anxious nation for its patience.I guess the Associated Press only reads the Political Machine sometimes, or they would ...

To Blunt Criticism, Obama Makes a TelePrompTer Move

To Blunt Criticism, Obama Makes a TelePrompTer Move

In a sure sign that it has been stung by criticism of President Barack Obama's over-reliance on a TelePrompTer, the White House made a change in location for the device for the president's prime time press conference last night. Gone were the familiar dual glass panels on either side of the podium from which Obama is so adroit at reading prepared remarks, and which have been popping up in more and more news photos of him. Instead, the president delivered his opening remarks reading from a flat panel placed at the back of the room. The move allowed Obama to offer his remarks while looking ...

The Truth About Barack Obama's TelePrompTer!

The Truth About Barack Obama's TelePrompTer!

I wrote a piece over the weekend debunking the hot new Barack Obama TelePrompTer narrative, and sure enough, this attack is gaining legs all over the blogosphere. The heat on this story derives from both The Drudge Report's linking last week to the recently-launched "Barack Obama's TelePrompTer's Blog," and the President's subsequent gaffe on The Tonight Show.Due to the explosive popularity of this rather simple-minded meme, I think a more thorough examination of the fallacies, misconceptions, and outright lies from which it springs is in order. There's an unintentionally ironic post up at ...

'Barack Obama's Teleprompter' Verges on Offensive

'Barack Obama's Teleprompter' Verges on Offensive

I'm not just referring to the witless titular blog, or its insistence on referring to the President as "Big Boy." No, I'm referring to the notion, birthed by anti-Obama wingnuts, aided by lies, and given wings by the MSM through constant repetition, that Barack Obama is purely a construct of the TelePrompTer (don't ask me why they spell it that way, the thing was invented when the Jetsons was on), and that he is helpless without it. A blogger at Fox News ran a story containing several Obama teleprompter lies, but even Politico and the NY Times have been worn down into printing stories about ...

Fox News Runs With Fake Obama Teleprompter Story

Fox News Runs With Fake Obama Teleprompter Story

John R. Lott, Jr. has just posted a story on Fox Forums about Barack Obama's use of a Teleprompter during his first prime-time news conference, and he includes an interesting "fact," with an even more interesting source:While people who watched Obama's first national press conference noticed his use of a teleprompter to give his initial presentation as well as in answering questions, the media and late night joke writers completely ignored it.The story he links to is mine, and it says nothing about any Teleprompter. While that alone is ironic, what's even better is the reason why my story says ...

White House: Obama Teleprompter Story Not True

White House: Obama Teleprompter Story Not True

After Barack Obama's first prime-time press conference, there were stories circulating among the right-o-sphere/PUMA-ocracy about Barack Obama's teleprompter. The story went, in part, that he used the prompter during the Q&A, not just his opening remarks. (Not true, you can see on any broadcast that the screens lowered into the floor at that point.) The other part of the story was that the White House is in the process of installing a video screen into the podium, so the President can get "Cliff notes" during press conferences. I asked Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton about it today. He ...
