The alliance said the strike also killed a number of other insurgents, including another al-Qaida leader known as Waqas. Egypt Puts Security Net Around Churches for Coptic Christmas

CAIRO - Egyptian authorities put up a heavy security cordon early Thursday around the main Coptic cathedral in Cairo hours before Christmas Eve Mass, using bomb-sniffing dogs, metal detectors and officers to try to prevent another attack like the New Year's suicide bombing of a church that killed 21 people. Al-Qaida in Iraq had threatened Christians in Iraq and Egypt in the weeks leading up to the holidays, and militant websites have even posted online lists of churches in Egypt to target with their addresses. Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, which makes up 10 percent of Egypt's 80 million ...

6 Terror Suspects Charged in Greece After Dragnet Arrests

ATHENS, Greece (Dec. 5) -- An Athens prosecutor on Sunday charged five men and a woman with terrorism-related felonies following a flurry of police raids believed to have thwarted an attack ahead of the second anniversary of violent riots sparked by the police shooting of a teenage boy two years ago. The suspects, aged between 21 and 31, were under surveillance for more than a month, but police resorted to dragnet arrests Saturday after two suspects were caught leaving an Athens hideout with backpacks of explosives, hand grenades and guns. "The assumption was that they were preparing an ...

While 'Opt-Out Day' Fizzles, Detained Passenger Mystery Goes Unnoticed

(Nov. 24) -- Forget "National Opt-Out Day." It turns out that while those touchy pat-downs and scandalous body scans continued to make headlines Tuesday, the Transportation Security Administration was involved in hotter pursuits. After unknown authorities removed two mystery men from a US Airways flight in Denver on Tuesday, the agency confirmed to AOL News Surge Desk that the TSA was tipped off about a passenger "acting suspiciously" and met the plane on the ground in Denver along with "law enforcement." Surge Desk reported Tuesday that two passengers had been removed by agents who had ...

TSA Airport Screening: Come Die With Me

TSA Airport Screening: Come Die With Me

You are witnessing the death of an industry. What the eco-freaks could never do -- drum up significant support for mass transit -- the TSA has done in just one decade. Hard to believe there was a time when flying was glamorous, but glamorous, exciting and sexy it was from the 1940s through the 1960s. Stewardesses wore cute little suits, and passengers dressed up too. Airline meals weren't great, but they sure beat the tiny bags of pretzels we get now. Back in the day, the word airplane conjured up images of passengers disembarking in Honolulu, welcomed by young women holding leis. An ...

Somalia Tops Global Terrorism Risk Index; US Ranks 33rd

(Nov. 15) -- Here is one list you don't want your country topping. The Terrorism Risk Index, published by the British risk advisory firm Maplecroft, draws on data from June 2009 to June 2010 to evaluate terrorist attacks in 196 countries based on frequency and intensity. Somalia is the country most at risk of a terrorist attack, according to Maplecroft's index, published today. The Terrorism Risk Index is one of 41 indices and maps included in the group's "Political Risk Atlas 2011," which will be published in December. Obama Confirms 'Explosive Material' Found in US-Bound Packages [PHOTOS]

(Oct. 29) -- At an emergency press conference from the White House today, President Barack Obama confirmed what authorities alluded to and all Americans feared: Packages sent from Yemen aboard European cargo planes were found to contain devices of an "explosive" nature "intended to do harm" to U.S. citizens, allegedly to Jewish synagogue-goers in Chicago. Two planes that departed from Paris and Cologne, Germany landed at Philadelphia International Airport. Another touched down in Newark, N.J., while a passenger jet was diverted to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport. CNN ...
