Police arrested today five people in Denmark and Sweden who are suspected of plotting what authorities called "an imminent terror attack" against a Danish newspaper that published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Danish intelligence chief Jakob Scharf said in a statement that the suspects "must be considered militant Islamists with relations to international terror networks," The New York Times reported. The suspects were planning to raid the offices of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Copenhagen and "kill as many as possible of the persons present," Scharf said. Violent protests ...
LONDON -- Twelve men suspected of plotting a terrorist attack were arrested in a series of dawn raids across Britain, police announced today. The suspects, who range in age from 17 to 28, were detained by unarmed officers at 5 a.m. this morning "on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism in the U.K.," police said in a statement. The BBC cited counterterrorism sources saying the operation was linked to an investigation into al-Qaida-inspired terrorism. "This is a large-scale, pre-planned and intelligence-led operation involving several forces," said ...
(Dec. 16) -- It might be time to dust off your old fallout shelter, if you have one. Federal officials and disaster experts are telling people the best place to be in case of a terrorist-style nuclear attack might be your own home. "The government has a surprising new message," The New York Times reports. "Do not flee." In fact, there is little new about this advice: It's what officials have been saying for several years now. (Dec. 9) -- He wasn't raised to be this way. The mother of Antonio Martinez, the man accused of plotting to bomb a military recruitment center in Maryland, wants that much, at least, to be clear. A day after Martinez was arrested on terrorism charges and accused of trying to detonate a car bomb in a sting set up by the FBI, the woman -- who would not give her name but identified herself to The Associated Press as Martinez's mother -- said she is a "devout American" and is embarrassed by her son's actions. Like the other accused "homegrown" terrorists before him -- from would-be Times Square ...

(Nov. 16) -- For years, the military has looked at ways to spot -- and stop -- divers and swimmers who could pose a security threat to ports and ships. Now an acoustics expert says he may have found a way to use the sound of a diver's breathing to ward off a potential attack. "One of the main concerns is a diver coming to port and bringing explosives and other dangerous devices," Alexander Sutin, a research professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology, told AOL News in an interview. "Now we know how to detect the diver, but then how can you stop him?" David J. Phillip, AP An acoustics ...
(Oct. 5) -- Four men accused of plotting to bomb New York synagogues and fire heat-seeking missiles at U.S. military planes were ready and willing to do things "ordinary people wouldn't even dream of," a prosecutor said during closing arguments in their trial. The men from Newburgh, N.Y., were caught in a sophisticated FBI sting in May 2009 that involved a paid informant posing as a representative from a Pakistani terror group. Over more than six weeks of testimony, the informant, Shahed Hussain, spent 13 days on the witness stand, describing the defendants' alleged willingness to help him ...
(Sept. 15) -- Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell says he is "appalled" that gay pride parades, taxpayer rallies and peaceful protests against oil giant BP all became the target of anti-terrorism bulletins distributed by a state agency. "I am deeply embarrassed, and I apologize to any of the groups who had this information disseminated on their right to peacefully protest," the governor told reporters Tuesday evening. The bulletins were issued by the state's Department of Homeland Security, but Rendell said he learned about them from a news story in The Patriot-News of Harrisburg this week. ...
The Basics - Islam has emerged as a political issue to the point that what a politician says about Muslims can factor into a degree of success or failure on Election Day. - Some decry Islamophobia as the cause, exacerbated by opportunistic political rhetoric, while others view the public's suspicions as a natural caution at a time of heightened concerns over terrorism and security. - In August, 30 percent of Americans held a favorable view of Islam, compared to 41 percent five years earlier. - The Islamic center proposed for a site a few blocks from Ground Zero became the flash point for a ...
