Terry Branstad
Republican Terry Branstad was Iowa's longest-serving governor, winning four terms from 1983-99. He served as lieutenant governor from 1979-83 after being elected to the state House for three terms starting in 1972. Branstad was president of Des Moines University for six years after leaving governor's mansion. He resigned last year to take another shot at the governor's office.
