Mubarak Regime Forces Cell Phone Companies to Text Its Messages

LONDON -- Anti-government protesters in Egypt used their cell phones to organize and broadcast their uprising to the world. Now the embattled regime of President Hosni Mubarak has realized that it can also use the same technology to fight its opponents. Over the past five days, Egyptians have been hit with a steady stream of pro-Mubarak text messages. "Youth of Egypt, beware rumors and listen to the sound of reason -- Egypt is above all so preserve it," read one text, according to a photograph and translation posted on this Flickr account. Another, received Sunday by an Associated Press ...

Wisconsin Gov. Wants 'Sexting' DA Removed From Office

(Sept. 21) -- Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle says he plans to move forward with the process of removing a district attorney from office who has admitted to sending lewd text messages to a domestic abuse victim. "I believe the process for removal needs to get going and get going immediately," the governor told ABC's "Good Morning America" today. Calumet County District Attorney Kenneth Kratz went on medical leave indefinitely Monday, after apologizing for sending dozens of text messages to a woman whose ex-boyfriend is accused of almost choking her to death. As Kratz prosecuted 26-year-old ...

Supreme Court: Text Messages Not Immune From Company Search

Cautiously, the Supreme Court waded into the field of cellphone and electronic device privacy Thursday, ruling that a California police chief's search of an officer's questionable text messages was allowable because it served a "legitimate work-related purpose." The unanimous decision in the case, City of Ontario v. Quon, was made narrowly as the high court steered clear of a sweeping opinion on privacy parameters for use of cellphones and other electronic communications equipment . The case involved a SWAT team officer who exceeded the monthly limit on text messaging from his ...

Psychologist: Teen Beating Suspect Has PTSD

(May 24) -- The Florida teenager accused of nearly beating an eighth-grade girl to death was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from the suicide of his brother, says the court-appointed psychologist who evaluated him. Psychologist Michael Brannon spent 20 hours with suspect Wayne Treacy, who pleaded not guilty to attempted murder for the March 17 attack on 15-year-old Josie Ratley in Deerfield Beach. In an interview on NBC''s "Today" show, Brannon said Treacy, 15, never dealt with the October death of his brother and is "a very sad kid" who is remorseful for the ...

Text-Message Campaign Generates Deluge of Aid Money for Haiti

A text-message campaign pushed by celebrities, athletes and the first lady has brought in $22 million in donations to the Red Cross for Haiti, the New York Times reports. The aid organization, one of the largest in the world, has raised $103 million, with nearly a quarter coming from the text-message campaign. Americans texted the word "Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross. "I need a better word than 'unprecedented' or 'amazing' to describe what's happened with the text-message program," said Richard Lowe, a spokesman for the Red Cross. The donations came despite questions about the ...

Wrong Number: Phone Harassment on the Rise in Egypt

It's a wrong number in so many ways. The BBC reports on the rising number of women in Egypt who report being sexually harassed over the phone, often by strangers. A recent survey put the number of women who were harassed or stalked over the phone at almost one out of four, mostly by men who are essentially cold-calling random numbers in the hopes of hearing a female voice on the other end of the line. Once they do, the calls keep coming. The upswing in harassment could be blamed on a number of factors: lack of enforcement of harassment laws, discomfort with reporting harassment, the harassers ...

Texting While Driving Ban Proposed in Senate

Senate Democrats introduced a bill on Wednesday that would ban texting on a cell phone or other personal electronic device while driving. If passed, the bill would force states to enact laws against texting while driving, or risk losing federal highway funds. "iPhones, Sidekicks and Blackberries are ingenious, indispensable devices," Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) said in a statement. "But while they make our lives so much easier, they make driving that much harder." ...
