Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! Before he got behind the wheel, this accused drunken driver should have handed over his keys -- and his cellphone. Pasco County Sheriff's Office deputies say Phernando Cuello was driving drunk and "sexting" when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed near New Port Richey early Sunday. Cuello initially told investigators that somebody "cut him off," before revealing he actually crashed because he was sending raunchy text messages to his girlfriend, according to police reports obtained by the St. Petersburg Times. ...
On Sunday's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," Justin Bieber and Emma Roberts made special appearances to support the Remember Alex Brown Foundation, which was established in honor of a 17-year-old Texas girl who died in a texting-while-driving accident. While the show provided Alex Brown's family with a newly remodeled home, it also raised awareness about the dangers of texting while driving. Emma Roberts explained that hearing about Alex's death had been "a wake-up call," and Justin Bieber pledged to donate a portion of his concert ticket sales to the Remember Alex Brown Foundation. Are you ready for the latest crisis in public health? After security video of a texting mall worker taking a tumble into a fountain went viral this week, America was reminded that it has a serious problem on its hands: texting while walking (TWW). Related Stories Cathy Cruz Marrero, Who Fell Into Mall Fountain, Has Splashy Criminal Record Though the injuries sustained by Cathy Cruz Marrero were little more than a bruised ego, some drenched clothing and a disabled cell phone, the star of the video says she now plans to sue the mall because rather than rush to ...
(Dec. 9) -- Zach Veach has already proven that he can steer a racecar around a track at 140 miles per hour. But his ability to parallel park is about to be put to the test. The 16-year-old racecar driver made a name for himself by finishing fifth in his rookie year in the USF 2000 series, but on Dec. 14 he'll face his toughest challenge so far in the driver's seat -- his road test. Veach started racing go-karts at age 12 (some kids start as young as age 5) and quickly sped to the top of the youth racing circuit, landing a coveted spot on the Andretti Autosport team last season. But despite ...
(Nov. 16) -- On this page, we've published several op-eds on the huge toll distracted driving is taking on the country's highways and byways. Traffic safety expert Leonard Evans, for example, noted that "driving while distracted is not like drunk driving -- it is far worse." Drunk drivers tend be on the road at night, when few other people are on the road. But distracted driving is a 24/7 problem, and as a result, "the victims of distracted driving are in all too many cases random road users behaving responsibly." In another piece, Mark Grabowski pointed out how, despite the risks, ...
(Nov. 16) -- The federal government is putting the faces of deaths from distracted driving crashes on display, hoping a new online video campaign will scare people straight. The Department of Transportation released three videos today in which a mother, a daughter and a father describe the loss of a relative killed in a distracted driving crash. The department says nearly 5,500 people were killed and 500,000 injured in accidents involving drivers talking on a cell phone or texting. "These people have courageously come forward to share their tragic stories in order to warn others against ...
(Sept. 28) -- Sending text messages from behind the wheel is dangerous, and can be deadly. On that point, at least, researchers agree. But the debate over how to mitigate the trend continues, as a new study concludes that texting bans in several states haven't managed to reduce accidents. Thirty states have already enacted the bans, with more planning to institute them in the weeks and months ahead. But a report by the Highway Loss Data Institute, which is funded by major insurance companies, found that existing laws in four states -- California, Minnesota, Washington and Louisiana -- didn't ...
(Aug. 12) -- After crashing his car into a double-decker bus in the new comedy "The Other Guys," Samuel L. Jackson's character offers a sarcastic apology to startled passengers. "Sorry, I was texting." The line is sure to elicit laughter from audiences because everyone knows what a nuisance drivers who text can be. But the only thing laughable about texting and driving is our laws against it. Texting is rapidly becoming the biggest hazard on our roadways. The National Safety Council, a nonprofit that promotes safe driving, estimates that each year as many as 1 million crashes -- or 18 ...
Even though teens send more text messages, adults are more often guilty of typing out the cell phone notes while behind the wheel, according to a new survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The organization polled 2,252 American adults, of whom 82 percent owned a cell phone. Of those, 58 percent sent text messages. Pew's findings led to a new report, tellingly dubbed "Adults and Cell Phone Distractions." A few of the survey's key results: --47 percent of adults who text admit that they've done it while driving, compared with 34 percent of 16- and 17-year-olds polled by ...
(May 19) -- When we think of the world's leading causes of death -- diabetes or HIV/AIDS, malaria or tuberculosis -- it's easy to forget that another deadly, but entirely avoidable, epidemic is quickly spreading. Road crashes claim 1.3 million lives each year, the equivalent of one death every 30 seconds. The World Health Organization projects that by 2030, traffic crashes will climb to the fifth from the ninth leading cause of death worldwide. And the vast majority of fatal road crashes are caused by preventable driver behavior. The weight of evidence shows that distracted driving -- in ...
