Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! Before he got behind the wheel, this accused drunken driver should have handed over his keys -- and his cellphone. Pasco County Sheriff's Office deputies say Phernando Cuello was driving drunk and "sexting" when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed near New Port Richey early Sunday. Cuello initially told investigators that somebody "cut him off," before revealing he actually crashed because he was sending raunchy text messages to his girlfriend, according to police reports obtained by the St. Petersburg Times. ...
On Sunday's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," Justin Bieber and Emma Roberts made special appearances to support the Remember Alex Brown Foundation, which was established in honor of a 17-year-old Texas girl who died in a texting-while-driving accident. While the show provided Alex Brown's family with a newly remodeled home, it also raised awareness about the dangers of texting while driving. Emma Roberts explained that hearing about Alex's death had been "a wake-up call," and Justin Bieber pledged to donate a portion of his concert ticket sales to the Remember Alex Brown Foundation. Cathy Cruz Marrero took a nontraditional route to fame. She became an unexpected celebrity recently when video of her falling into a mall fountain while distracted by text messaging went viral. She took advantage of the situation by going on ABC's "Good Morning America," where she explained, "I was actually texting a friend of mine from church." She also complained that the mall security guards were too busy laughing to make sure she was OK. Now she's likely to be more embarrassed. Reports have surfaced saying she has a criminal record that includes several convictions for theft as well as a ...
Are you ready for the latest crisis in public health? After security video of a texting mall worker taking a tumble into a fountain went viral this week, America was reminded that it has a serious problem on its hands: texting while walking (TWW). Related Stories Cathy Cruz Marrero, Who Fell Into Mall Fountain, Has Splashy Criminal Record Though the injuries sustained by Cathy Cruz Marrero were little more than a bruised ego, some drenched clothing and a disabled cell phone, the star of the video says she now plans to sue the mall because rather than rush to ...
(Sept. 28) -- Sending text messages from behind the wheel is dangerous, and can be deadly. On that point, at least, researchers agree. But the debate over how to mitigate the trend continues, as a new study concludes that texting bans in several states haven't managed to reduce accidents. Thirty states have already enacted the bans, with more planning to institute them in the weeks and months ahead. But a report by the Highway Loss Data Institute, which is funded by major insurance companies, found that existing laws in four states -- California, Minnesota, Washington and Louisiana -- didn't ...
(Aug. 23) -- Before there were text messages -- or rather, "b4 txts" (B.T.?) -- there was emblematic poetry. Fashionable during the Victorian era, emblematic verse played games with form and typography. A poem about flight and divinity, for example, might have its stanzas arranged in the shape of an angel's wings. And a pining ode to one's beloved might substitute letters, numbers and punctuation marks for actual words: "He says he loves U 2 X S, / U R virtuous and Y's." This kind of diction, of course, will probably be familiar to any modern-day reader who has ever used a cell phone or ...
Even though teens send more text messages, adults are more often guilty of typing out the cell phone notes while behind the wheel, according to a new survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The organization polled 2,252 American adults, of whom 82 percent owned a cell phone. Of those, 58 percent sent text messages. Pew's findings led to a new report, tellingly dubbed "Adults and Cell Phone Distractions." A few of the survey's key results: --47 percent of adults who text admit that they've done it while driving, compared with 34 percent of 16- and 17-year-olds polled by ...
(May 19) -- When we think of the world's leading causes of death -- diabetes or HIV/AIDS, malaria or tuberculosis -- it's easy to forget that another deadly, but entirely avoidable, epidemic is quickly spreading. Road crashes claim 1.3 million lives each year, the equivalent of one death every 30 seconds. The World Health Organization projects that by 2030, traffic crashes will climb to the fifth from the ninth leading cause of death worldwide. And the vast majority of fatal road crashes are caused by preventable driver behavior. The weight of evidence shows that distracted driving -- in ...
Last week, things were quiet at the Hot Chocolate for Haiti table. The fundraising effort was set up near the entrance of Boston University's George Sherman Union, a hub for quelling caffeine addictions and between-class munchies. Plenty of students rushed by, but they didn't take the bait to make a donation for Haiti in exchange for the goods. Two girls sat behind the table, standing guard over a shoebox with a few crumpled bills thrown in. Both were playing on their phones. It would be no surprise if these girls, like millions of others, had opted to donate to the Haiti relief effort via ...
A text-message campaign pushed by celebrities, athletes and the first lady has brought in $22 million in donations to the Red Cross for Haiti, the New York Times reports. The aid organization, one of the largest in the world, has raised $103 million, with nearly a quarter coming from the text-message campaign. Americans texted the word "Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross. "I need a better word than 'unprecedented' or 'amazing' to describe what's happened with the text-message program," said Richard Lowe, a spokesman for the Red Cross. The donations came despite questions about the ...
