George Harrison's Birthday: 5 Reasons 'The Quiet One' Might Be the Greatest Beatle

George Harrison's Birthday: 5 Reasons 'The Quiet One' Might Be the Greatest Beatle

George Harrison would have celebrated his 68th birthday today, and while there's certainly stiff competition from the likes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Surge Desk started wondering: Could "the quiet Beatle" actually be the greatest Beatle? To be clear, this post is not an attempt to settle this timeless and endless debate once and for all. Even the most entry-level Beatles historian can make a sound argument in favor of Lennon's social impact or McCartney's musical prowess as evidence of one or the other's superiority within the band. That said, in an argument that traditionally turns ...

Guitar Hero: Illinois Tries to Reclaim John Lennon's Ax

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan gave the Peace Museum a chance -- and now she wants John Lennon's guitar back. The state's top prosecutor sued the small and financially troubled Chicago museum in Cook County Court on Feb. 8 to turn over an acoustic guitar that belonged to the former Beatle and all other artifacts from the peace-loving institution. "The Peace Museum's property is in need of charitable protection," the lawsuit alleged, because the museum has gone belly up and hasn't even staged an exhibit since 2004. Big Day in Beatles Lore With Anniversaries of Cavern Club, 'Ed Sullivan' Gigs [VIDEOS]

If the Beatles had a holiday, it would be celebrated today, Feb. 9. A half century ago today, in 1961, the Fab Four took the stage for the first time at Liverpool's Cavern Club. It was a gig that they landed because, according to Rolling Stone, then-drummer Pete Best's mom "had to beg the club's booker Ray McFall to secure the band even a lunchtime slot." Their pay for the show: 3 pounds. Rolling Stone notes that there's some disagreement as to whether the first gig came on Feb. 9 or Feb. 21 but says, "Most reliable literature points to February 9th, including the world's leading ...

Our Year of Zombie Politics

Our Year of Zombie Politics

Wait: Even in politics, 2010 was the year of zombies? Sure, the hot new wonky tome "Zombie Economics" tells how "dead" economic theories walk among us to shape our paychecks, and sure, zombies lumber out of our TVs almost no matter what channel we click to, and sure, my fellow fantasy prose-slingers are flinging new novels about the undead at the dust of Stephen King and George Romero, but zombies as a metaphor for 2010's politics? Come on! What happened to vampires? Vampires are a great political metaphor! Bloodsuckers. Say no more. But zombies? Who are they in America's 2010 ...

John Lennon Quotes: 'I'm Not Interested in Being a Dead F***ing Hero'

(Dec. 8) -- Thirty years ago today, the world lost John Lennon. But his voice hasn't been completely silenced. In a treat for fans, Rolling Stone magazine is releasing what it's calling Lennon's "final interview," which was given just three days before he was killed. In it, the Beatles legend talks about being a father and slams his critics. "What they want is dead heroes, like Sid Vicious and James Dean. I'm not interested in being a dead f***ing hero. ... So forget 'em, forget 'em," he said. Lennon, of course, would never live to see how ironic those words have become. On Dec. 8, ...

Platform Invasion: The Beatles Sell 2 Million Plus Songs in First Week on iTunes

(Nov. 23) -- The lads from Liverpool might yet have a future on the Internet. Apple Inc. announced that it has sold more than 2 million of The Beatles' songs since the Fab Four's catalog was made available on iTunes. In terms of albums, that old-fashioned way of grouping and releasing music, the group has sold more than 450,000 since Nov. 16. Though one wonders how long the group, which broke up back in 1970, can sustain a pace of selling more than 285,000 songs per day, the funny thing is that some people actually wondered whether Apple and The Beatles had missed the boat by taking years ...

The Beatles Invade iTunes Music Charts

(Nov. 17) -- The Apple critics may be underwhelmed, but the people have spoken and they like The Beatles. Considering that the boys from Liverpool managed just fine for roughly 40 years without iTunes, it's no surprise that John, Paul, George and Ringo are dominating Apple's digital charts. The Beatles began their invasion of the iTunes song and album charts as soon as Steve Jobs and company officially announced the group's long-anticipated iTunes music store debut. As of early this afternoon, all 17 iTunes Beatles offerings -- 16 albums plus the one box set -- ranked among the top 50 on ...

ITunes Offers the Beatles; the Internet Is Not Impressed

(Nov. 16) -- Huge sigh of relief. Steve Jobs will finally be able to make that Beatles playlist on his iTunes. After much speculation, Apple announced on Tuesday that iTunes will now offer 16 Beatles albums, starting with "Please, Please Me" (released in 1963) through "The Beatles, 1967-1970" (released in 1973). Most albums will cost you $12.99 a piece, but more dedicated fans will be able to spring for the digital box set -- actual box not included -- while less album-oriented followers can purchase singles at $1.29 a pop. Now if only they'd release that limited edition Yellow Submarine ...

Are the Beatles Finally Coming to iTunes?

(Nov. 15) -- Twist and shout and download, it looks like the Beatles are at long last coming to iTunes. As Surge Desk reported earlier today, speculation over what changes Apple Inc. planned to announce regarding its iTunes online music store had led some industry analysts to speculate that the company had indeed overcome contract disputes and procured the rights to sell the Beatles' catalog. The on-again, off-again negotiations to bring the Beatles to iTunes dragged on for years, with Apple, EMI and the Beatles' management company trading lawsuits along the way. If anything, it has been ...
