The Weird World of Steven Tyler

The Weird World of Steven Tyler

"American Idol" isn't exactly known for being edgy or weird, but judging by new judge Steven Tyler, times they are a-changin'. Tyler spoke briefly with the press Tuesday about the brand-new season of "American Idol," which kicks off at 8 tonight on Fox. Instead of sugar-coating his new job on the show or touting specific contestants, the outspoken, clearly unpredictable Aerosmith rocker said what he wanted, when he wanted. Even if it made no sense. Michael Becker, FOX Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are the latest celebrities to join Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest on "American ...

Roger Ailes Apologizes to ADL, but Not to NPR for 'Nazi' Comments

Roger Ailes Apologizes to ADL, but Not to NPR for 'Nazi' Comments

(Nov. 19) -- Did I say Nazi? I meant nasty, inflexible bigot. Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes may have apologized for calling NPR executives a bunch of "Nazis" during an interview with the Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz, but he certainly isn't backing down. In a letter to the Anti-Defamation League, Ailes said that he "was of course ad-libbing and should not have chosen that word," adding that he "was angry at the time because of NPR's willingness to censor Juan Williams for not being liberal enough." Ailes also qualified the Nazi statement, saying that in his "now considered opinion, ...

Fox News' Roger Ailes Calls Obama Socialist, Jon Stewart 'Crazy' and NPR 'Nazis'

(Nov. 18) -- How does one define "fair and balanced"? In a wide-ranging interview with the Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz, Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes was not shy about voicing his opinions on a variety of subjects, including President Barack Obama, Jon Stewart and NPR. The interview, which ran in two parts at Tina Brown's site, offered insights into how the man charged with running Fox News views some of the topics most discussed on his network. On President Obama: "The president has not been very successful. He just got kicked from Mumbai to South Korea, and he came home and attacked ...

Tina Brown and Cathie Black Tackle the Impossible -- Again

NEW YORK – With a double-barreled launching of female power, two celebrated media giants, Tina Brown and Cathleen P. Black, commanded the attention of this blasé city and the nation this week. In separate moves, each has agreed to take on daunting challenges that many regard as either lost causes or unfixable problems. Each has proved her mettle in media wars, and each can claim first-woman-ever titles in some of the toughest arenas of publishing and management. Tina Brown, who made Vanity Fair into a magazine phenomenon, has agreed to merge her news and political web site, The Daily ...

Obama's Immigration Speech: Big Words and Passion, but What's New?

Obama's Immigration Speech: Big Words and Passion, but What's New?

President Barack Obama's impassioned appeal for comprehensive immigration reform on Thursday recast familiar themes and objectives, slammed Republican opponents, and sought to bring the nation together on one of its most intractable political issues. Reaching out in every direction -- to immigrant history, to the Statue of Liberty and Emma Lazarus' stirring poetry -- Obama showed at times the fervor of his 2008 campaign speeches, calling immigration reform "a moral imperative," and demanding accountability and a common sense solution. But beneath the powerful rhetoric and genuine commitment, ...

Meghan McCain: Harsh Treatment Discourages Female Politicians

Meghan McCain: Harsh Treatment Discourages Female Politicians

In a column on The Daily Beast, Meghan McCain argues that the steep price women pay for being in politics is a disincentive for trying to break barriers. "It's a dilemma that I and every woman of my generation face," McCain writes. "We want to be involved in politics -- perhaps even run for office -- but it's a steep price to pay. One day there will be a woman president, we are all told as little girls. You too can be a congresswoman or senator. But the reality of today is that to do so, you have to give up so much, in a way that is never asked of a man, and I believe running for office has ...

The 'Gig Economy' Takes Hold in America

The 'Gig Economy' Takes Hold in America

Over at The Daily Beast, editor Tina Brown spots an ominous employment trend: Careers are becoming a thing of the past. In their place, the workforce is being forced to stitch together a combination of short-term, part-time gigs in order to make ends meet:My own anecdotal evidence among friends is now borne out by an exclusive poll conducted last week by The Daily Beast and Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates. Five hundred employed U.S. citizens aged 18 and over were interviewed via the Internet on January 8 and 9. A full one-third of our respondents are now working either freelance or in two ...

William F. Buckley's Son for Obama

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
William F. Buckley's Son for Obama

Read all about it in Tina Brown's new juggernaut, The Daily Beast. Christopher Buckley, a successful author in his own right, started out this campaign as a McCain supporter. So what turned him away from the Arizona senator? This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget "by the end of my first term." Who, really, believes that? Then there was his self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign ...
