Report: Assange Blames 'Jewish' Journalists for Negative Press

LONDON -- WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange claimed that he is the victim of a conspiracy led by "Jewish" journalists intent on smearing his organization, according to a report in the British magazine Private Eye. Assange called the publication's account "completely false." Assange is reported to have phoned the magazine's editor, Ian Hislop, on Feb. 16 to complain about an earlier article on WikiLeaks associate Israel Shamir. The article questioned why Assange and his anti-secrecy organization were working with the Russian journalist, who has published a string of anti-Semitic pieces and is ...

Donald Rumsfeld's New Memoir Trashed by Critics, John McCain and the ACLU

You go to press with the book you have. Coming in at just over 800 pages, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's new book, "Known and Unknown," was an ambitious undertaking. Given the harsh early reviews that have come in so far, however, one wonders if all that effort might have been better spent on a golf course. Surge Desk surveys the critical response to the book so far. Writing at The New York Times, veteran reviewer Michiko Kakutani lays into Rumsfeld's tome with marked vigor: The tedious, self-serving volume is filled with efforts to blame others -- most notably the C.I.A., ...

British UFO Hacker Fights Extradition to US

(Dec. 3) -- When Gary McKinnon decided to try to find secret UFO files, he did what any curious computer expert would do: He hacked into nearly 100 military and NASA computers until he was finally caught. Eight years later, the Scottish systems administrator awaits his legal fate. As controversy swirls around WikiLeaks, the website that this week released secret diplomatic cables without authorization, one of the documents in question contains information about McKinnon, whose lengthy extradition case still has the U.K. buzzing, The Guardian newspaper reports. McKinnon, 44, who suffers from ...

WikiLeaks 3: Diplomatic Disaster or Snoozefest?

(Nov. 29) -- How bad is it? Julian Assange's international media organization, WikiLeaks, stirred up controversy once again on Sunday by making public nearly a quarter-million previously confidential American diplomatic documents. The latest release raises concerns over the breadth of American diplomatic efforts and the Arab world, as well as critical philosophical issues surrounding the role of media and protection of government documents. WikiLeaks released the classified documents -- a collection of correspondences between the State Department and diplomatic outposts around the world -- ...

Leaking of Secret U.S. Cables Sparks Diplomacy Crisis

NEW YORK -- A large batch of secret American diplomatic cables over the past three years offers an unusual look at back-channel discussions by embassies around the world, unflattering views of world leaders and stark evaluations of nuclear and terrorist threats, The New York Times reported Sunday. The disclosures in the Times and four other major world news organizations could fuel a worldwide diplomacy crisis with the United States at its center. "It is nothing short of a political meltdown for U.S. foreign policy," said Der Spiegel, the German publication that, like The Times, obtained the ...

WikiLeaks 3: New Docs May 'Wreak Havoc,' Pentagon Warns Congress

(Nov. 24) -- Will it be any worse this time? On Tuesday, officials at the Pentagon briefed members of Congress on the imminent release of a new trove of classified U.S. government documents set to be made public by WikiLeaks, the European-based watchdog group. The potentially dangerous intelligence information could be made public through The New York Times, Der Spiegel (Germany), Al-Jazeera and The Guardian (U.K.) as soon as Friday. The number of documents that Julian Assange's group plans to expose to public view is said to dwarf the 400,000 pages released in October that dealt with the ...

WikiLeaks Iraq: The 4 Most Shocking Revelations So Far

(Oct. 22) -- WikiLeaks today released nearly 400,000 classified U.S. military documents from the war in Iraq, the largest such leak in American history. The documents were simultaneously sent to The New York Times, The Guardian newspaper in Britain, the Arabic TV network Al Jazeera and Germany's Der Spiegel. The news organizations immediately began scouring the documents for potentially damning information. The Pentagon decried the release. "We deplore WikiLeaks for inducing individuals to break the law, leak classified documents and then cavalierly share that secret information with the ...

Leading Global Warming Denialist Bjorn Lomborg: Climate Change Is a 'Chief Concern'

(Aug. 31) -- Bjorn Lomborg, science's most notable climate change skeptic, has changed his mind. In a new book to be published next month, Lomborg calls for $100 billion to be spent annually to tackle global warming. For years, the vast majority of the scientific community have agreed that mankind is responsible for global warming. Lomborg, a Danish professor, was one a rare breed of scientist that dismissed this consensus, thus serving as a convenient source whom other skeptics, including prominent American businessmen, could point to for added validity. How does Lomborg explain his ...
