What Will Dalai Lama's Resignation Mean for Tibetans?

The 14th Dalai Lama plans to step down as the political leader of the Tibetan people -- a move designed to strengthen the Tibetan government, he said. He will remain the spiritual leader of Tibetans and hopes to ultimately decide how his successor is chosen. Chinese authorities, however, have threatened to decide who will one day take over from him. The 75-year-old Nobel laureate said in a speech today in Dharamsala, India, that his decision was timed to coincide with the elections next week to choose a new prime minister for the Tibetan government in exile. "My desire to ...

Dalai Lama Will Give Up Political Role

DHARMSALA, India - The Dalai Lama said Thursday that he will give up his political role in the Tibetan government-in-exile and shift that power to an elected representative, as the 76-year-old Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader struggles with growing worries about who will succeed him when he dies. Speaking on the anniversary of the failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule in his Himalayan homeland that sent him into exile, the Dalai Lama said the time had come "to devolve my formal authority to the elected leader." While he has long said that he wants the exile government to take on ...

Groupon Yanks Controversial Super Bowl Ad on Tibet

Groupon is pulling its Super Bowl ad featuring Tibet -- as well as ads that feature endangered Brazilian rainforests and whales -- after backlash against the spots. Groupon CEO Andrew Mason, in a blog post on Thursday, said the company will stop running the ads as soon as possible. "We hate that we offended people, and we're very sorry that we did -- it's the last thing we wanted," Mason wrote. "We've listened to your feedback, and since we don't see the point in continuing to anger people, we're pulling the ads." Mason noted the company thought it was poking fun at itself, "but clearly the ...

Groupon's Tibet Ad: When Edgy Goes Overboard

Groupon's Tibet Ad: When Edgy Goes Overboard

Groupon's Super Bowl ad debut featuring Tibet made a splash, but not the kind the company perhaps expected. After spending big bucks -- about $3 million -- for the spot, plus the cost of a trendy ad firm, Groupon won not kudos but criticisms for its efforts. Now, the company is trying to explain the ads and repair the damage at the same time as it prepares for an initial public offering. The ad began with scenes of the Himalayan land in the western part of China. Tibetans have protested their lack of freedom under the Chinese government, with many Tibetans imprisoned as a result. "The ...

Darth Vader Commercial Got Cheers (but Which Ads Got Jeers?) [VIDEOS]

The Packers may have brought home the Vince Lombardi Trophy, but there was another brutal battle last night: for the title of best Super Bowl 2011 commercial. And on the flip side, there was more than a little competition for the title of the worst. Surge Desk collects the winners and losers of the advertising world's Super Bowl. Let's start with the best, shall we? Volkswagen's "The Force" ad made many smile. The Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro called it a "geektastic charmer." Another nominee for the highlight reel is certainly the soaring spot for the Chrysler 200. Starring Eminem ...

Dalai Lama and Scientists Dig Compassion, Differ on Approach

Dalai Lama and Scientists Dig Compassion, Differ on Approach

(Oct. 18) -- Even for someone known for his nomadic ways, the Dalai Lama has been on quite a journey lately, albeit an academic one. First, on Thursday, the 14th spiritual leader of Tibet visited Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., where he spent two days giving talks, including one before a conference of top-tier scientists hoping to determine the neurobiological roots of social compassion and empathy. Then, on Sunday, he showed up for a three-day-long stay at Emory University in Atlanta, appearing under the title "Presidential Distinguished Professor" and lecturing on behalf of a ...

Book Shows What's on the World's Dining Tables

(Sept. 2) -- Think it's hard enough to arrange a dinner date? Try arranging 80 of them in 30 countries over a three-year period. That's one of the struggles that Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio faced while writing their book, "What I Eat: Around The World In 80 Diets" (Ten Speed Press), which details what 80 different people around the planet might eat on a particular day. And because the authors wanted to show respect to the folks nice enough to break bread, pita or empanadas with them, Menzel and D'Aluisio -- who are married -- chose to eat the same foods as well. ©Peter Menzel / ...

Tibetan Mastiff Trend Sweeps China, the Web

(Aug. 6) -- Talk about the dog days of summer! On Friday, one species gripped the attention of Web surfers and writers alike: the Tibetan mastiff. Though not as popular in the U.S., the rare animal is reportedly a status symbol among the Chinese elite, who are willing to fork over vast sums to procure their own prized pooch, making them an ideal subject for a recent episode of NBC's "Today" show. One in particular was covered last year by AOL Daily Finance for being the "most expensive dog ever purchased" at $600,000. And believe it or not, "Yangtze River Number Two," as the dog was so ...

Iowa Man Attempts 11-Month, 10,000-Mile Triathlon

Correction, Aug. 9: An earlier version of this story included an incorrect number for the distance of the triathlon. (July 14) -- If they ever held a contest for the world's toughest triathlete, Charlie Wittmack would run away with first prize. He'd also swim away with it and at least get a good head start on his bike as well. That's because Wittmack, 36, is starting out on a worldwide triathlon that, if completed, will stand as the most extreme physical achievement ever attempted by a human. Courtesy Andy Stoll Charlie Wittmack says the swimming is the hardest part of his global ...
