Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! If the Broncos lined up today, Kyle Orton would be the team's starting quarterback. But the Broncos are not lining up for a game today and coach John Fox's endorsement Thursday of Orton as Denver's starter over Tim Tebow doesn't mean all that much at this point. Because in reality, neither Orton, nor Tebow nor Brady Quinn has been anointed as the Broncos' starter. Fox, speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, himself noted that he chose his words carefully in discussing Orton's place in the Broncos' quarterback hierarchy. "I can't predict (who starts) Week 1. That's why I say, 'today,' ...
So here was Blaine Gabbert sitting in a room in an "event'' staged by ESPN being "coached'' for the NFL Scouting Combine by Terry Shea, an ex-NFL assistant and one-time head coach at Rutgers on how to "interview'' for teams in Indianapolis. "What would you say to team that tells you it won't take you?'' Shea asked in his "role'' as an NFL interviewer -- a GM, a coach or a personnel guy. "That I'll beat your butt for the next 15 years,'' Gabbert replied, told, of course, that it was the correct answer to demonstrate his "competitiveness.'' ESPN was conducting its own reality show. But it's ...
Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow could be on the verge of another bestseller. Tebow, who had the NFL's top selling jersey as a rookie this past season, has finished co-authoring his autobiography, which is scheduled to be released in bookstores and online in April. The book, published by Harper Collins, is 256 pages and was written with Nathan Whitaker, who previously co-authored books with former Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy and NFL broadcaster James Brown. The Denver Business Journal reported that Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy winner who led Florida to two national titles before ...
Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas underwent surgery Monday to repair the Achilles' tendon tear he suffered a week ago during a workout in Atlanta, his offseason home. The team has said his recovery is expected to take six to eight months, putting his availability into question for the scheduled start of next season. Thomas sent out a Tweet just before having the operation. "Heading to surgery this morning," Thomas wrote Monday. "Everyone keep me in prayers that it goes well." The workout mishap is the latest injury to befall Thomas, whose rookie season was impacted considerably by a ...
Many 2010 fantasy football leagues were won by the guys with Arian Foster, Peyton Hillis and Michael Vick. I had one league where one owner landed all three! Yes, that owner took home the title (with relative ease). No, it wasn't me. Teams with those players did an excellent job at analyzing the fantasy landscape for potential breakouts and nailing some of the best players of this past season. Now it's time to get a head start on the scouting for 2011 and see if we can turn up some more breakout players. Sam Bradford, QB, STL Last season's No. 1 overall pick came through for the Rams in a ...
You already know what happened in 2010. Aaron Rodgers finished the year tied for first in fantasy points a year after destroying the field. Michael Vick re-emerged as the pre-eminent fantasy threat of our time, averaging nearly 30 points per game. Philip Rivers played without his top three receiving targets for long stretches of the fantasy season, yet still finished as a top-three quarterback. Peyton Manning seemed to have a down year, throwing 17 interceptions (and 11 in the course of three games), yet he tied Rodgers for top QB honors. Drew Brees also had a problem with picks but finished ...
Denver Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway, trying to counter the perception that the job already has been handed to Tim Tebow, reiterated Wednesday that no decision has been made on the team's starting quarterback for next season. Elway made his comments while in the Dallas area for Super Bowl week. He told the Denver Post that the quarterback position is one of many on the team still subject to evaluation by new coach John Fox, his staff and team executives. Elway did not rule out the possibility that Kyle Orton, who started 13 games before being slowed by a rib ...
DALLAS -- Debbie Did Dallas. Ryan Pickett is taking a pass. What Super Bowl would be complete without a player using it as a moral platform? Last year, it was Tim Tebow and his pro-life commercial. This year it's Pickett. Green Bay's defensive tackle not only wants to stop the Steelers this Sunday. He wants to stop pornography. Like Tebow, this has triggered a chorus of people screaming "Butt Out!" To which I say, why so sensitive? NFL players have campaigned against smoking, drunk driving, homelessness and numerous other causes over the years. Pickett isn't telling people not to engage in ...
As a prospect coming out of Florida, Tim Tebow may have been the most divisive player of the last decade in terms of answering the question, "Where should he be drafted?" Opinions ranged from "surefire first-rounder" to "undrafted," Ultimately, Josh McDaniels took a chance and used Denver's first-round pick on Tebow. Would it pay off? Tebow would end up sitting on the bench for most of the season while Kyle Orton excelled and the Broncos lost regardless. McDaniels was fired before he could ever see Tebow as a starter after posting a 3-9 record. With nothing to lose, interim coach Eric ...
