Bebeto Matthews, AP New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, left, listens as former President Bill Clinton speaks during a news conference announcing air quality findings for the city on Wednesday. The concentrations of two components of car exhaust -- nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen monoxide -- dropped significantly in the ...
Times Square -- the infamous Manhattan haven for misfits and grifters -- is about to become a little freakier as oddballs from all over the world descend on the Ripley's Believe It or Not Odditorium to compete for a gig with the sideshow. Ripley's is looking for the cream of the wacky crop to show off their bizarre skills on videos that will be voted on by visitors to the company's Believe It or Not Odditorium in Manhattan. "Imagine American Idol, only for people who aspire to be sideshow freaks," said Buck Wolf, a judge for the contest and also AOL News senior correspondent. "Now, ...
Four decades after it was stolen, a battered leather wallet containing family photos and an American Express card is back in the hands of its grateful and astonished owner. Rudolph Resta was an art director at The New York Times in 1970. He left his wallet in a jacket pocket in a coat closet at work one day back when the paper operated in the old Times building just off Manhattan's Times Square. When Resta, now 77, returned after lunch, the wallet was gone. The mystery picked up 40 years later when José Cisneros, a security guard who works in the former Times building, found the wallet ...
NEW YORK -- A man accused of going on a 28-hour stabbing rampage through the city shouted that he was the victim of a "setup" as he was led from a police station Sunday. Maksim Gelman was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on charges that he hacked three people to death, then stalked the city for more than a day, attacking innocent strangers, hijacking vehicles and killing a pedestrian with a car. He did not speak as he stood shackled at the ankles and arms while dressed in a white jumpsuit issued to him after his bloody clothing was seized as evidence. He was ringed by a half-dozen ...
NEW YORK -- Revelers smooched and cheered the famous ball drop in New York's Times Square as the largest New Year's Eve celebration in the U.S. ushered in 2011. Most tried to set aside concerns about the worldwide economic downturn as partiers from New Zealand to Asia to Europe toasted to hopes of a more prosperous year to come. In New York, as many as a million people braved tight security and chilly temperatures Friday night to take part in the storied Times Square New Year's celebration, first begun in 1904. Crowds counted down to midnight as the glowing 6-ton Waterford Crystal ball ...
While the weather will be dry and tranquil when the ball drops in Times Square at midnight, parts of the nation will have nasty -- if not downright dangerous -- weather to ring in 2011. The combination of strong winds, snow and blowing snow will result in blizzard conditions in northern and western Minnesota, eastern North Dakota and much of South Dakota this evening through Saturday morning. Snowfall totals from this second of back-to-back storms will approach a foot in some locations, and the combination of snow and blowing snow will reduce visibility to near zero at times. Wind chill ...
It's been another productive year for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, the Norfolk, Va., organization that exports its wacky brand of performance activism to the rest of the world. In case you missed it, some good people who care deeply about vegetables did some very good things in the nude in 2010. Remember, if there's anything that you should take away from a PETA stunt, it's this: (1) Don't eat anything other than lettuce, and (2) whenever you want to make a point, take off your clothes. ...
On the other side of the globe, it's 2011 already. Fireworks lit up the 1,000-foot Sky Tower in New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland, as thousands took to the streets there to celebrate theirs being the first major country to ring in 2011. Celebrations are also under way in Sydney, Australia, where people camped out all day in their summertime sunshine to claim coveted spots in parks overlooking the harbor and famed Opera House. "We have been waiting here by the harbor since 6 a.m.," Brazilian exchange student Marcio Motta told the Sydney Morning Herald. "We know how to party on New Year ...
With just hours to go before the ball drops, the FBI in New York says it knows of no credible terrorist threats involving the traditional New Year's Eve celebration in Manhattan's famed Times Square. "While there's no credible threat, the FBI and NYPD, as they do every year, will have a large security effort in and around Times Square," FBI agent Richard Kolko, a spokesman for the New York office, told AOL News. Kolko said the FBI and New York police will have fully operational control centers and teams of bomb techs to respond to suspicious packages. Hazmat and SWAT teams, evidence ...
Add New Year's 2011 Times Square Ball Drop to his impressive resume. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore A. Giunta, the first living person to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, is this year's guest of honor at the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball Drop. Giunta, who received the America's highest military honor for his efforts in the war in Afghanistan, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg will press the ceremonial button to signal the release of the famous crystal ball from atop the One Times Square Building. Here is a video of President Barack Obama describing Giunta's heroic efforts and ...
