Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! There may be more than a dozen toilets on his front lawn, but David Linscott will not sit down. The Kittery, Maine, plumbing contractor has lined his property with 17 commodes of varying shapes and sizes as an act of protest against his town's decision to make additions to the middle school across the street from his home. "Originally, it was intended to be a pretty obvious political statement toward the town," Linscott told Foster's Daily Democrat. Renovations were made to Kittery's Shapleigh Middle School after a nearby elementary school was shut down. Linscott says the subsequent road ...
Rio de Janeiro's famed Carnival celebration is all about letting loose -- but this year, revelers are being told to hold it in. Police reportedly arrested 214 people on charges of public urination at Carnival celebrations last weekend in an effort being called the "Zero Tolerance for Pissing" campaign. "We are going to constantly fight those urinating in the street," said Alex Costa, the official in charge of public order, according to an Agence France-Presse report posted on MyFoxNY.com. The crackdown on public urination comes after officials installed portable toilets at Carnival hot ...
Most people considering a hotel look at amenities such as swimming pools, spa services and gourmet restaurants -- not the power of the toilets. However, a clogged-up toilet is the sort of thing that people talk about on the, er, back end, according to Richard Senechal, the senior vice president of facilities for Loews Hotels. "Guests want a reliable toilet," he told AOL News. "You don't hear about that on the front end, but if there is a problem, you hear about it." Apparently, clogged toilets are enough of a problem at hotels that Loews tried to eliminate any problems customers ...
(Nov. 24) -- Even if you manage not to overstuff yourself at Thanksgiving, your kitchen drain probably won't be so lucky. According to Roto Rooter, the day after Thanksgiving is the single busiest of the year for residential plumbers, mainly because big holiday meal preparation and cleanup leads to lots of unwanted waste in the kitchen drain, garbage disposal and toilets. "People think the garbage disposal or the toilet are trash cans," said John Elward, the operating manager for a Roto Rooter in Fort Wayne, Ind. "They think nothing of putting egg shells down the disposal. They might as well ...
(Nov. 19) -- Today, nature calls for a World Toilet Day celebration. The holiday that is arguably the most ripe for bad puns and toilet humor, Toilet Day is actually a serious matter. The international day of awareness, started in 2001 by the World Toilet Organization, calls attention to the 2.6 billion people exposed to risk and disease because they live without toilet access. According to the Toilet Day website, nearly 1.8 million people -- mostly children -- succumb to diarrheal disease spread through improperly disposed fecal matter. So how does one participate Toilet Day? By squatting, ...
(Nov. 11) -- When you think of a plumber, you may automatically think of an old, crusty, chubby guy working underneath your sink with his butt crack hanging out. But now, one group of fresh, sexy plumbers is on a mission to permanently change the public perception of the profession. For the fifth year in a row, LR Services Plumbing -- a family-operated company that services the Los Angeles area -- has released a sizzling-hot wall calendar featuring its finest employees. The provocative pages of the "The Plumbers" 2011 calendar are filled with sultry, seductive images of men at work. After ...
NEW YORK (Sept. 22) -- India has made significant progress over the past 10 years in providing basic education, health care and sanitation for its 1.2 billion people, but experts in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations development summit say those efforts still fall woefully short for much of its population -- in part because of the complex political mechanics of the world's largest democracy. "When you're dealing with the politics of India, you realize how difficult and complex it is to move the reform agenda forward," said Kapil Sibal, India's education minister, at a panel ...
(Aug. 30) -- All you need is love. But let's forget about what you need and talk about what you want -- and if that included something very intimate once belonging to John Lennon, his toilet seat made someone very happy over the weekend. John's john was one of many items up for grabs on Saturday during the 33rd annual Beatles convention being held in Liverpool, England, and it was almost certainly the most talked about after an unidentified buyer purchased the porcelain seat for about $14,740 -- around 10 times its original estimate. The toilet sat in Lennon's Berkshire home, Tittenhurst ...
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Aug. 24) -- Amy Ross navigates the filthy, feces-strewn backstreets here in flip-flops and a miniskirt, bobbing along quite happily, giving the distinct impression that she's either been in this city too long or not long enough. Ross is a program manager for Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods, or SOIL, a Haiti-based organization that specializes in toilets, or what the humanitarian community euphemistically refers to as "sanitation." Ross' good humor makes her an ideal candidate for this job, in which she is routinely talking about, or surrounded by ... ...
President Obama's $787 billion economic stimulus package, intended to jump-start the economy and create jobs, is spending tens of millions of dollars to repair and build toilets. Tax dollars are quite literally being flushed down the drain while unemployment is near 10 percent and the economy shows few signs of improvement. ...
