Relief Well Completed; BP Readies 'Final Kill'

Relief Well Completed; BP Readies 'Final Kill'

(Sept. 17) -- A relief well 18,000 feet below the Gulf of Mexico's seabed has finally intersected BP's blown-out oil well, setting the stage for engineers to permanently seal the rupture by the end of the weekend. By Sunday, the fix could close out the final chapter in the five-month saga of the world's worst-ever accidental oil spill. Work on two relief wells began in early May, after an April 20 explosion killed 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon rig and triggered the spill that led to more than 200 million gallons of oil gushing into the gulf. Now That the Well Is Capped, Should BP Ever Be Allowed to Open It Again?

Now That the Well Is Capped, Should BP Ever Be Allowed to Open It Again?

(Aug. 6) -- You'd think that after suffering the worst accidental oil spill in history, the rush to drill more new holes in the ocean would be tempered somewhat. But for an oil-addicted planet, simply turning away from the reserves still locked beneath BP's freshly sealed Macondo well may prove too difficult to endure. With the cement from Thursday's static kill operation still not dry, questions are already arising about what will happen to one of the biggest oil discoveries in U.S. history. As reported by The Associated Press, approximately 1.9 billion gallons of oil still remain in the ...

BP Says 'Static Kill' Effort Is Finally Plugging Gulf Well

BP Says 'Static Kill' Effort Is Finally Plugging Gulf Well

(Aug. 4) -- BP claimed victory today in the fight to permanently seal its runaway Gulf of Mexico oil well, announcing that it's achieved the "desired outcome" by plugging the damaged pipe with heavy mud as part of a "static kill" operation. In a statement on its website, BP called the move a "significant milestone" but cautioned that the well is now being monitored, and that "further pumping of mud may or may not be required." Relief wells also still need to be used, it said. "The well pressure is now being controlled by the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling mud, which is the desired ...

BP: Upcoming 'Kill' Attempt Might Do the Trick Alone

BP: Upcoming 'Kill' Attempt Might Do the Trick Alone

NEW ORLEANS (Aug. 2) -- After insisting for months that a pair of costly relief wells were the only surefire way to kill the oil leak at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, BP officials said Monday they may be able to do it just with lines running from a ship to the blown-out well a mile below. As crews planned testing to determine whether to proceed with a "static kill" to pump mud and perhaps cement down the throat of the well, BP Senior Vice President Kent Wells said if it's successful the relief wells may not be needed, after all, to do the same weeks later from the bottom. The primary ...

Coast Guard: New Gulf Oil Spill Will Take More Than a Week to Plug

Coast Guard: New Gulf Oil Spill Will Take More Than a Week to Plug

(July 29) -- When it comes to the oil spills of 2010, sometimes it feels as if we're taking one step forward, two steps back. After initially announcing that the Barataria Bay oil spill might be contained this week, U.S. Coast Guard officials now say that the year's second spill in the Gulf of Mexico will take an estimated 10 to 12 days to stop. Wild Well Control of Harlan Harahan, La., the company contracted to shut off the gushing rig in Bayou St. Denis, announced that the additional time is needed to stop the oil from flowing into the shallow gulf waters off the coast of Louisiana, The ...

Relief Well Unplugged, BP Readies Final 'Kill' Operation

Relief Well Unplugged, BP Readies Final 'Kill' Operation

(July 29) -- With a nearby relief well unplugged after a delay during Tropical Storm Bonnie, BP is preparing two final kill operations to stanch the flow from its damaged Deepwater Horizon oil well from top and bottom, hoping to begin sealing it permanently by early next week. Engineers used underwater robots to remove a protective plug Wednesday from a relief well that was drilled to within 5 feet of the blown-out well, before Bonnie came along and halted progress. Now the relief well must be flushed out with drilling mud before it can connect to the damaged pipe -- a move government spill ...

BP's 'Static Kill' Solution for the Oil Spill, Explained

BP's 'Static Kill' Solution for the Oil Spill, Explained

(July 26) -- Meet the "static kill," BP's latest solution to the oil spill conundrum. On Monday, BP and the federal government announced they were set to begin implementing the static kill plan beginning Aug. 2, just days before a new relief well is scheduled to be completed. But how does this latest attempt to seal the well differ from the failed top kill, and why is it necessary now that the Top Hat 10 cap has effectively halted oil from gushing into the Gulf of Mexico? After looking into the latest and greatest oil well fix, Surge Desk presents the following answers to some of the most ...

BP Oil Spill Update: Static Kill Explained, 3 More Burning Questions Answered

(July 20) -- As we enter the third month of the BP oil spill, reports from BP and Incident Commander Thad Allen seem for the first time -- dare we say it -- positive (or at least not entirely disquieting). Still, there remain some questions about just how well the various operations are proceeding underwater. To answer them, Surge Desk rounds up the latest news on the status of the containment effort. 1. What's the status of the seepage? The seep that scientists found near the well on Sunday is naturally-occurring, BP says. 2. What's this "static kill" or "bullhead kill" they keep ...

Pensacola Beach Residents Await 'Inevitable' Date with Oil Spill

The oily sheen is now just seven miles from the buttermilk white beaches of Pensacola Beach, Fla., where residents are waiting for what seems a certainty. "I think what we're getting today is people who want to get here one more time before the oil comes," Tim Ristow, a kitchen manager for a local restaurant told the Pensacola News Journal. Yesterday, as the Surge Desk reported, the first traces of the oil spill showed themselves on the barrier islands of Mississippi and Alabama. Tourism is taking a beating, as is the morale of local residents. Meanwhile, it seems like each and every one ...

Health Problems Plague Gulf Spill Cleanup Crews

Health Problems Plague Gulf Spill Cleanup Crews

Only weeks after they were hired to help with the Gulf oil spill cleanup, local fishermen are complaining of health problems caused by exposure to chemical toxins. Headaches, nausea, dizziness and breathing trouble are among the ailments plaguing the crews, who say they've mostly been working without protective gear like gloves or respirators. A crew of seven workers were admitted to hospital last Wednesday because of the issues, which doctors blamed on exposure to chemical agents, as well as dehydration. Area congressman Rep. Charlie Melancon has asked BP to fund temporary medical clinics ...
