Toyota to Pay $32.4M in Extra Fines

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to pay the U.S. government a record $32.4 million in additional fines to settle an investigation into its handling of two recalls at the heart of its safety crisis. The civil penalties will settle investigations into how Toyota dealt with recalls over accelerator pedals that could get trapped in floor mats and steering relay rods that could break and lead to drivers losing control. The latest settlement, on top of a $16.4 million fine Toyota paid earlier in a related investigation, brings the total penalties levied on the company to $48.8 million. It ...

The Lexus Recall, a Harrowing Crash, and Suggestions for Toyota

The Lexus Recall, a Harrowing Crash, and Suggestions for Toyota

I see Toyota is back in the news, this time because the company is recalling the Lexus over three-year-old reports that these cars sometimes stop at random. Which is the opposite of what happened to me and my Lexus. In November 2008, my car nearly killed me. I was almost home when my almost-new Lexus hybrid SUV went off the road, as if it had a mind of its own. When I told my friends and others about what happened, no one believed me. Of course, that was before all the headlines about the recall of millions of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Also before company president Akio Toyoda's contrite ...

Toyota Learned of Lexus Engine Problems Years Ago

(July 6) -- Toyota Motor (TM) is once again fending off accusations that it dragged its feet in issuing a recall, this time regarding its latest one, which involves 138,000 Lexus cars in the U.S. The company knew about a problem part in V-6 and V-8 engines used by its luxury division that could cause stalling, but didn't think a recall was warranted until recently, the world's largest automaker said Monday. Toyota received its first complaint about the problem in Japan in March 2007, a spokeswoman told Bloomberg News. ...

Government to Seek Maximum Penalty Over Toyota Recalls

WASHINGTON (April 5) -- The government accused Toyota of hiding a "dangerous defect" and proposed a record $16.4 million fine on Monday for failing to quickly alert regulators to safety problems in gas pedals on popular models such as the Camry and Corolla. The proposed fine, announced Monday by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, is the most the government could levy for the sticking gas pedals that have led Toyota to recall millions of vehicles. There could be further penalties under continuing federal investigations. The Japanese automaker faces private lawsuits seeking many millions ...

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

Several trends point to the beginning of the end of car culture in the United States. But are Americans seriously ready to embrace alternatives to automobiles? It's been a bad few years for cars in America. First, there was the auto industry bailout to the tune of $110 billion. Then, two of the three big carmakers -- GM and Chrysler -- went through bankruptcy. Finally, just when we thought that the future lay in turning Japanese, even the beloved Prius went off the road (literally) and Toyota has recalled nearly 9 million of its vehicles in the last few months. ...
