Experts Predict Another Active Hurricane Season, More Impact on US

The hurricane season doesn't officially begin until June 1, but private forecasters already have issued their outlooks for the Atlantic Basin, predicting an active season and the potential for greater impact on the U.S. mainland than last year. The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season was the third most active on record in terms of the number of named storms, but the 19 tropical storms and hurricanes had little direct impact on the United States. Last year, both AccuWeather and the Tropical Meteorology Project accurately predicted the active season, but over-predicted the U.S. impact. In April ...

Alex Downgraded, But Likely to Strengthen to Hurricane in Gulf

(June 27) -- Tropical Storm Alex has weakened to a tropical depression during its trip over the Yucatan Peninsula, but the reduction in strength will be temporary. It appears as if Alex is destined to become the first Atlantic basin hurricane of the season, and while Alex will not directly affect the area of the gulf with the oil spill, it will become a formidable storm. The interaction of land is what weakened the storm. Alex moved on Sunday into the much warmer-than-normal water of the Gulf of Mexico, where overall atmospheric conditions will remain favorable for development and Alex is ...

Johns Hopkins Professor Leaves Neuroscience for the Racetrack

The path from neuroscience professor to professional race horse trainer may not be the most direct one, but can it really be called the equivalent of throwing your experience in the trash? Michelle Nihei, now 38 and a former Johns Hopkins faculty member, left neuroscience eight years ago to focus on a new professional passion: racing and training horses. She is the subject of a mostly positive profile in Thursday's New York Times, which contains this line: "She could have had a long career as a scientist. Instead, she chose to take her diplomas, her training and her background and virtually ...

Concord: Give Smith Drag Strip, Own Street

This whole flap with the City of Concord, North Carolina and Speedway Motorsports CEO Bruton Smith really is turning quite comical. Speedway Motorsports owns Lowe's Motor Speedway, the race track in Concord.First, Concord re-zoned Bruton's land to specifically deny him the right. Or, more easily, the equivalent to finding the meanest dog at the pound and smacking it on the nose. The dog, Smith in this case, bought back -- and hard. Wild claims that he's raze the speedway and find a new location were thrown out. With Concord backed into the doghouse, a quick reversal of fate was in order, and to ...

UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 Forecast: High Speeds with High Pressure, Ground Swells and Flurries of Carnage

Kevin Harvick has a premonition about tomorrow's UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400:"The race will suck. The paving is awful. It's rough. They had some guys that pave parking lots out there doing it. It's pretty awful ... It's too bad they repaved it and screwed it up for the next four or five years. The track is extremely fast. And I am worried about the tires and how they are going to wear on the new surface."Happy never has been one to hold back. The change in the track's surface caused Goodyear to come up with harder compound tires and many drivers commented on how hard it was to come to grips with ...
