Did Navy's Brain Injury Subjects Receive Substandard Care?

A Navy study designed to test an experimental therapy on people suffering from traumatic brain injury did not follow proper protocols for human subject research, the Pentagon's inspector general concluded. A summary of the inspector general's investigation released late last week said that "management and conduct of the clinical trial were inconsistent with military standards for human subject medical research." The report also said it's possible that patients involved in the study received substandard care, and it found problems with the review process used for military medical research ...

Gabrielle Giffords' impressive recovery is only a "minor setback," according to neurosurgeons, but is just one of a number of complications that could slow down the congresswoman as she heals from a gunshot wound to the head. "It always makes people who do what I do nervous when you hear someone say that someone has a 101 percent chance of surviving," Dr. David Okonkwo, director of the Brain Trauma Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh, told AOL News today in a phone interview. "The reality is that patients who sustain ...

After months of debate over the proper handling of concussions, especially among teenage football players, the American Academy of Neurology has published a position paper on the issue. What's the AAN's key point? That concussions can be lifelong injuries with incredibly serious implications ...

Thousands of Soldiers Unfit for War Duty

More than 13,000 active-duty Army soldiers -- the equivalent of four combat brigades -- are sidelined as unfit for war because of injury, illness or mental stress. In an unmistakable sign that the Army is struggling with exhaustion after nine years of fighting, combat commanders whose units are headed to Afghanistan increasingly choose to leave behind soldiers who can no longer perform, putting additional strain on those who still can. The growing pool of "non-deployable'' soldiers make up roughly 10 percent of the 116,423 active-duty soldiers currently in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands ...

Depression an Aftershock of Traumatic Brain Injuries

(May 18) -- More than 6 million Americans are living with the consequences of traumatic brain injury. The condition leads to physical and cognitive disability but also has surprising implications for psychological health -- including an increased risk of serious depression. Research has already suggested that traumatic brain injuries are linked to depression, along with its accompanying health problems like aggression, anxiety and suicide. But it's the physical and cognitive impairments caused by traumatic brain injuries that are typically the focus of scientific research and treatment ...
