It's not nice to fool Mother Nature. Or is it? If you're not getting enough air, you might want to spend time sitting under a newly designed artificial tree that converts carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen. In the modern world of urban pollution, we can't seem to grow enough trees to naturally convert carbon dioxide into life-sustaining air -- the process of photosynthesis -- until now. Researchers at New York's Columbia University, working with Influx Studio in Paris, have designed a faux or artificial tree. It's basically a machine fashioned to resemble a dragon blood tree, complete ...
WASHINGTON -- Strong winds have toppled the National Christmas Tree. The Washington, D.C., Fire and EMS department reports that the tree fell over Saturday morning. There were no injuries or other damage. The National Christmas Tree is a Colorado blue spruce that was planted on the Ellipse, near the White House, in 1978. It was 15 years old and 30 feet tall when it was planted. Now it's 47 years old and stood about 42 feet. National Park Service spokesman Bill Line told The Washington Post that a successor has already been picked and it will be planted in coming weeks. He said ...
LEOGANE, Haiti -- The key to making good news in Haiti is to stay out of it. That's according to John Winings, acting director of the Comprehensive Development Project, a small organization operating in the hills above Leogane. Over the past 20 years, CODEP has quietly planted more than 8 million trees -- a living, breathing forest in Haiti. Reforestation and anti-erosion programs are overwhelmingly unsuccessful in Haiti, which suffers from vast deforestation. But CODEP has a remarkable 80 percent success rate with the trees it plants. As it turns out, the hard part isn't planting the trees ...
(Nov. 22) -- Our age of smart phones, iPads and wireless connectivity may have one very important casualty: trees. According to a joint study conducted by several universities in the Netherlands, the rise in electromagnetic fields associated with wireless networks and cell phones is blamed for stunting tree growth in urban areas, MacWorld reported. Researchers in Alphen aan den Rijn were commissioned to study the impact of wireless networks on the Dutch city's trees after abnormalities in growing patterns were spotted there. While there is not conclusive evidence that Wi-Fi use is ...
(Nov. 3) -- Criminals beware: America's streets are being protected by 20-foot-tall silent sentinels surrounded by thick armor and capable of making energy using nothing but the sun. Unfortunately, they can't move. Trees may not be able to actively fight crime, but they actually do a good job of keeping America's streets safe, according to a recent U.S. Forest Service study in Oregon. Neighborhoods with big trees are likely to see lower rates of crime, the study says. "We wanted to find out whether trees, which provide a range of other benefits, could improve quality of life in Portland by ...
Ron Paul may not have won the Republican presidential nomination, but he damn-sure won every debate, most notably embarrassing John McCain at the Reagan Library. So, who would you book to debate Paul on the legalization of marijuana, or any topic? I can't think of many names lower on that list than Stephen Baldwin. As I've noted before, I like Baldwin. Agree with him or not (and I don't), he's got an unvarnished quality that's tough not to like. But a debate with Ron Paul? I want some of what you're smoking.Paul takes out most of his buddies in the process, noting twice that "a lot of people in ...
