Greenpeace Occupies Rig in Arctic Drilling Protest

ANKARA, Turkey -- Greenpeace activists climbed aboard an oil rig off Istanbul on Friday in a bid to prevent it from reaching Greenland to begin deep-water drilling in the Arctic, but the vessel continued on its course undeterred. The environmental group said eleven activists, some in rock-climbing gear, used speedboats to intercept and then climb atop the Leiv Eiriksson at dawn, after it had left a port in Istanbul. They climbed the rig's derrick, unfurling a banner that read: "Stop Arctic destruction" and "Go Beyond Oil, Choose Clean Energy." Greenpeace / AP Greenpeace activists ...

At Camel Fighting Matches, Fans Eat Camel Meat

Hundreds of thousands of Afghan people gathered last week in Mazar-e-Sharif to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian new year, and in addition to the customary food and ceremonies, festival-goers enjoyed one of the region's oldest spectator sports: camel fighting. Sounds gruesome, and judging by the amount of camel spit said to fly through the air, it certainly is, but the clash of split-hoofed beasts is part of a 2,400-year-old tradition in parts of the Middle East and South Asia. Raucous spectators gather to watch male camels in the 10-minute showdown, slamming necks and butting heads until one ...

NATO Deal on Libya Doesn't Mean Quick Exit for US

WASHINGTON -- NATO's limited role in command of the no-fly zone over Libya doesn't allow the U.S. to make a quick exit from the costly military operation as the Obama administration had wanted. American sea and airpower remain key parts of the effort to counter forces loyal to Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi after allies balked at assuming complete command of the campaign that began six days ago. The U.S., along with France and Great Britain, maintain primary responsibility for attacks on Gadhafi's ground forces and air defense systems, which are the toughest and most controversial parts of ...

NATO Takes Command of Part of Libya Operation

BRUSSELS -- After days of hard bargaining among its members, NATO agreed late Thursday to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya - but not other military operations there. The agreement will allow the United States to hand over command and control of part of the international operation, as it has been eager to do. But it appeared that some NATO members balked at any involvement in attacks on targets on the ground. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who announced the NATO agreement in Brussels, said the alliance operation would proceed in parallel with the bombing campaign carried out ...

Tripoli Evacuations: Nations Rush to Get Their Citizens Out of Libya [VIDEOS]

As Moammar Gadhafi continues his violent crackdown on the protests in Libya, nations are rushing to evacuate their citizens from the country. Most are departing from Tripoli, Libya's capital and principal port. The U.K.-based Independent Television News captured footage of crowds at Tripoli International Airport, where many passengers were hoping to catch flights to nearby Malta. Turkey has dispatched two ships to rescue its nationals, and Italy is sending boats and planes. The government of India has ordered two ships to assist thousands of Indians stranded in Tripoli and ...

Greece Beefing Up Patrols to Stem Immigration From Egypt

ATHENS, Greece -- As the exodus of foreigners and Egyptians continues from Cairo, Greece has beefed up its own border patrols and said today it was considering asking the European Union's force, Frontex, to extend sea patrols to fend off a fresh wave of illegal immigrants hitting Europe. Greece is already grappling with an immigration crisis that has seen more than 128,000 illegals sneak into the country in 2010, the highest influx recorded yet by any European Union member state. Now, fears that the escalating crisis in Egypt could uncork a fresh wave of illegal immigrants coming into ...

Donna D'Errico to Climb Mount Ararat in Search of Noah's Ark

Former "Baywatch" star Donna D'Errico has enjoyed a pretty amazing career arc. But the 42-year-old actress, who recently turned down a spot on "Dancing With the Stars," is now focusing on Noah's ark. D'Errico, 42, is in training to fulfill a lifelong dream of climbing Mount Ararat in Turkey to search for the frozen remains of Noah's ark. According to Biblical legend, the ark was built centuries ago to protect Noah's family and two of every kind of animal during a flood lasting 40 days and 40 nights. After the great flood, the ark supposedly landed atop the mountain. Many believers have ...

Analysis: The US Conundrum in Egypt

WASHINGTON -- As with Iran 30 years ago, American leaders again are wrestling with the moral conflict between Washington's demands for democracy among its friends and strategic coziness with dictatorial regimes seen as key to stability in an increasingly complex world, particularly the Middle East. The turmoil in Egypt - and its potential for grave consequences for U.S. policy throughout the region - was inevitable. The recent WikiLeaks release of U.S. diplomatic reports showed that Washington knew what problems it increasingly faced with the regime of President Hosni Mubarak and his three ...

Student's Porn Film Project Sparks Controversy in Turkey

ISTANBUL -- The film was intended as a thesis shot at one of Turkey's most liberal universities. It has sparked a nationwide controversy, led to the firing of three academics and prompted an investigation into possible criminal charges. The lesson appears to be: Turkey is not ready for pornography. Deniz Ozgun, a film student at Istanbul's Bilgi University, had asked permission from his supervisors to make a pornographic movie as a dissertation meant to show that even amateur porn movies "are also professional productions which simulate the look of an amateur, individual and/or homemade ...
