Wisconsin Protesters: Can You Spare Some Solidarity?

Wisconsin Protesters: Can You Spare Some Solidarity?

Sorry, Wisconsin protesters. I want to root for unions. But I can't. That's because they're only for the working man and woman. They don't seem to care about the unemployed and the legions of Americans forced into part-time work. As depicted in the British comedy "I'm All Right Jack" -- I'm all right, and to hell with everyone else -- unions are narrowly focused on union workers. That's the hidden reason sympathy has declined. A lot has happened to the working man and woman in the last 40 years, and none of it good. Unions have not been paying attention. Unions brag it was they who put an ...

Economy Loses 95K Jobs Due to Government Layoffs

WASHINGTON (Oct. 8) -- A wave of government layoffs in September outpaced weak hiring in the private sector, pushing down the nation's payrolls by a net total of 95,000 jobs. The unemployment rate held at 9.6 percent last month, the Labor Department said Friday. The jobless rate has now topped 9.5 percent for 14 straight months, the longest stretch since the 1930s. The report is the final one before the November elections, which means members of Congress will face voters next month with an economy that is still struggling to create jobs. if(typeof ...

Why Hasn't the Economy Recovered Yet?

Why Hasn't the Economy Recovered Yet?

(Sept. 13) -- In the current issue of the New York Review of Books, there's a good primer on the roots of the 2008 economic crises and explanations for its lingering impact by Robin Wells and Paul Krugman. While the United States and Europe have, for now, avoided a Great Depression-like crash and GDP is rising again, other indicators are not as reassuring. The writers point out: Yet unemployment has hardly fallen in either the United States or Europe -- which means that the plight of the unemployed, especially in America with its minimal safety net, has grown steadily worse as benefits run ...

Unemployment Rate Rises to 9.6 Percent

(Sept. 3) -- The unemployment rate rose in August for the first time in four months as weak hiring by private employers wasn't enough to keep pace with a large increase in the number of people looking for work. The Labor Department says companies added a net total 67,000 new jobs last month, down from July's upwardly revised total of 107,000. Wall Street analysts expected a smaller gain, according to Thomson Reuters. ...

Jobless Claims Hit a Nine-Month High of 500,000

(Aug. 19) -- This time in August is called the dog days, but as far as the U.S. job market is concerned, it's more like the bear days. Initial jobless claims unexpectedly rose by 12,000 to 500,000 last week -- their highest level since November 2009 -- the U.S. Labor Department announced Thursday. ...

New Report: 125,000 Jobs Were Cut in June

WASHINGTON (July 2) -- A wave of census layoffs cut the nation's payrolls in June for the first time in six months, while private employers added a modest number of jobs. The unemployment rate dipped to 9.5 percent, its lowest level in almost a year. Employers cut 125,000 jobs last month, the most since October, the Labor Department said Friday. The loss was driven by the end of 225,000 temporary census jobs. Businesses added a net total of 83,000 workers, an improvement from May. But that's also below March and April totals. The report reinforces concerns that the recovery is ...

Republicans to the Unemployed: You're Lazy

Republicans to the Unemployed: You're Lazy

Salt, meet wound. Wound being unemployment, and salt being the suggestion that the worst economy since the Great Depression was created by its powerless victims -- the jobless. Republicans, do tell: If so many jobs are ripe for plucking, explain the five applicants for every job. (Down from six a few months ago. Oh joy.) Why would anyone believe unemployment is voluntary when there is so much evidence to the contrary? The answer is surprisingly simple: Because that belief makes them feel good. Life is not fair, we learned in childhood. Apparently we never got over it. The psychology term ...
