The Labor Department says the unemployment rate dropped in 34 states in March. That's the largest number of states to record a decline since June. The rate rose in seven states and was unchanged in nine and Washington, D.C. Employers hired more workers in 38 states. A government survey of employer payrolls finds only 12 states plus Washington, D.C., lost jobs last month, the fewest since ...
WASHINGTON -- More people applied for unemployment benefits last week, the first increase in three weeks. Still, the broader trend points to a slowly healing jobs market. The government says applications for unemployment benefits rose 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 412,000 for the week ended April 9. That left applications at their highest point since mid-February. Applications near 375,000 are consistent with a sustained increase in hiring. Applications peaked during the recession at 659,000. The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose to 395,750. However, ...
WASHINGTON -- Businesses in February posted the largest number of job openings in more than two years, evidence that hiring is picking up as the economy grows. The Labor Department said Wednesday that employers advertised 3.1 million available jobs that month, the most since September 2008. That was the height of the financial crisis, when Lehman Brothers collapsed. The competition for those jobs is easing, though still intense. The department's report shows that there were 4.4 people, on average, competing for each available job in February. That's down from nearly 7 in July 2009, but still ...
WASHINGTON -- The unemployment rate fell to a two-year low of 8.8 percent in March, capping the strongest two months of hiring since before the recession began. The economy added 216,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said Friday. Factories, retailers, the education and health care sectors and professional and financial services all expanded payrolls. Those job gains offset layoffs by local governments. Another month of brisk hiring provided the latest sign that the economy is strengthening nearly two years after the recession ended. Private employers, the backbone of the ...
LANSING, Mich. -- Gov. Rick Snyder on Monday made Michigan the first state in the country to lower the number of weeks jobless workers can get state benefits, a trend other cash-strapped states may follow as a way to avoid taxing businesses more for unemployment benefits. Snyder said he signed the bill reducing state benefits from 26 to 20 weeks because it will allow people out of a job now to get up to 20 more weeks of help from a federal program for those who used up their state and most of their regular federal unemployment benefits. The change will allow them to extend unemployment ...
WASHINGTON -- U.S. companies have added jobs for 12 straight months, giving some of the hardest hit states a lift. But the gains have been uneven and several states are still losing jobs. California and Michigan, which each suffered some of the worst losses during the recession, are adding jobs again. California last month had its single best month for job creation in more than two decades. Still, six states lost jobs from February 2010 through last month. Among the worst for job creation in that time were New Mexico and New Jersey, states that only a year ago were in the middle of the ...
RACINE, Wis. -- There once was a time when Harry and Nancy Harrington -- their teenage children in tow -- walked the picket line outside the nursing home where she was a medical aide, protesting the lack of a pension plan for the unionized work force. But those days of family solidarity are gone. Harry now blames years of union demands for an exodus of manufacturing jobs from this blue-collar city on the shore of Lake Michigan. He praises new Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for attempting to strip public employee unions of nearly all of their collective bargaining rights. And he wishes police ...
The jobs may finally be coming back. After a financial crisis and recession that knocked more than 8.5 million people out of work and a faltering economic recovery that couldn't even produce enough new jobs to employ graduates and other new entrants to the labor force, the U.S. private sector last month created jobs at a healthy pace. Non-farm payrolls increased by 192,000 in February, the Labor Department reported today. And while budget-strapped state and local governments continued to issue pink slips at an alarming rate, the private sector added 220,000 new posts. The unemployment rate ...
WASHINGTON - Employers in February hired at the fastest pace in almost a year and the unemployment rate fell to 8.9 percent - a nearly two-year low. The economy added 192,000 jobs last month, with factories, professional and business services, education and health care among those expanding employment. Retailers, however, trimmed jobs. State and local government, wrestling with budget shortfalls, slashed 30,000 jobs, the most since November. The government's report Friday bolstered hopes that employers will shift into a more aggressively hiring mode and allow the economic recovery to get on ...
