The Labor Department says the unemployment rate dropped in 34 states in March. That's the largest number of states to record a decline since June. The government says applications for unemployment benefits rose 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 412,000 for the week ended April 9. That left applications at their highest point since mid-February. Applications near 375,000 are consistent with a sustained increase in hiring. Applications peaked during the recession at 659,000. The Labor Department said Wednesday that employers advertised 3.1 million available jobs that month, the most since September 2008. Rick Snyder on Monday made Michigan the first state in the country to lower the number of weeks jobless workers can get state benefits, a trend other cash-strapped states may follow as a way to avoid taxing businesses more for unemployment benefits.
