International food services provider Sodexo announced that it is signing onto the Meatless Monday health campaign, which promotes social and environmental change through vegetarianism, one day a week. Sodexo feeds over 10 million people daily, so it's no surprise that Meatless Monday program director Chris Elam calls the development a "big deal." "Sodexo is truly leading the way by lending their large-scale support to the movement," read a statement posted on the Meatless Monday website. "Not only will their Meatless Monday meals reach hundreds of ...
Surprise! PETA has named former junk-food junkie Bill Clinton its Person of the Year, after the ex-president gave up his Big Macs and became a vegan. Clinton once unabashedly dished about his love of fast food, but turned to plants this year when his daughter, Chelsea, asked him to get in shape before her July wedding. And after forgoing animal products, Clinton lost 24 pounds. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is tickled. "Thanks to his new plant-based diet, he's shed some pounds, decreased his risk of future heart problems, and spared the lives of many animals," the group said in ...
(Sept. 14) -- At home, they're an avid devourer of rubbed kale salads and scrambled tofu. To friends and family, they're known as the resident vegan or vegetarian. But behind closed doors, or maybe even after one too many drinks at a cocktail party, they're shoveling down bacon-wrapped scallops. Cheatatarians, writes Sami Grover, are those who sometimes "sneak a bacon sandwich or a piece of fish," often unbeknownst to their ...
(July 20) -- Losing weight isn't as simple as calories in, calories out -- at least for those who eat meat. That's the surprising result of a new study that links meat consumption to long-term weight gain. Researchers out of Imperial College, London, tracked the dietary habits of 370,000 adults across Europe for five years. Those who ate the least meat also gained the least weight. Eating an additional 250 grams of meat meant an extra 4.4 pounds over five years. Because meat is so dense in calories, it makes sense that vegetarian diets would be lower in overall energy -- making weight ...
The heat-and-serve meals seen on "Mad Men" don't often inspire me to much food policy thought, but I did appreciate "Mad Men's" very own Soylent Green moment this week when, upon learning what brand of dog food his puppy was eating, a focus group attendee cried out, "Ponies! They make it out of ponies!" After which the dog food company executive calmly observed to the surrounding Sterling Cooper staff that horse meat seemed to have acquired a bit of a branding problem. Likewise, the meat we eat also suffers from a branding problem, namely that we don't think about it enough in terms of ...
