If police stop her for wearing a veil over her face, she'll remove it - then put it back on once they're out of sight. If that doesn't work, she'll stay home, or even leave France. For Muslim women who cover their faces with veils, it is the moment for making plans. Starting April 11, a new law banning garments that hide the face takes effect. Women who disobey it risk a fine, special classes and a police record. The law comes as Muslims face what some see as a new jab at their religion: President Nicolas Sarkozy's party is holding a debate Tuesday on ...
Wedding dresses can be awfully expensive, but with a little ingenuity -- and a whole lot of two-ply toilet paper -- a gorgeous gown can be rolled out in no time. That's the premise, at least, behind the seventh annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest being hosted by the bride-on-a-budget website Cheap Chic Weddings. Every spring, the wedding website holds a contest to see who can make the best-looking bridal-wear out of just a few simple tools: tape, glue and, most importantly, toilet paper. Contestants can sew the toilet tissue together with a needle and thread, but that's the extent of ...
CAIRO (Oct.27) -- Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden threatens in a new audio tape to kill French citizens to avenge their country's support for the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan and a new law that will ban face-covering Muslim veils. In the tape obtained by satellite television station Al-Jazeera and then posted on its website on Wednesday, bin Laden said France was aiding the Americans in the killing of Muslim women and children in an apparent reference to the war in Afghanistan. He said the kidnapping of five French citizens in the African nation of Niger last month was a reaction to what he ...
NICE, France (Sept 15) -- A top cleric at Egypt's most respected mosque broke with many other global Islamic leaders by saying today that he supports France's decision to ban the full face-covering Islamic veil. Abdel Muti al-Bayyumi, a member of the Al-Azhar mosque council, said there is nothing in Islamic law or the Quran that calls for a full-face veil. The French Senate voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to ban such garments as the burqa, a one-piece garment with a fabric grid before the eyes, and the niqab, a facial veil that leaves only the eyes visible. Claude Paris, AP Kenza Drider, ...
Early last month, an Egyptian immigrant was banned from her French classes in Quebec. At issue was neither grades nor bad behavior but dress. Naema Ahmed, 29, refused to remove her niqab, the full veil that covers all but the eyes. The school, which helps integrate immigrants into French-speaking Quebec through language immersion, said that having Ahmed's mouth covered impeded her teacher's ability to correct pronunciation. Further, they couldn't guarantee that Ahmed's teacher would be a woman, which she requested. Ahmed was asked to either remove her veil or not return to class. She opted for ...
