Entergy Corp. Sues Vt. Officials to Keep Nuclear Plant Open

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The owners of Vermont's troubled nuclear plant sued state officials Monday to stop them from closing the plant down next year, setting up a court fight about who has jurisdiction - the state or federal nuclear regulators. New Orleans-based Entergy Corp., which recently won a new 20-year license for Vermont Yankee but has battled with state officials since the discovery of radioactive tritium at the plant, says the state doesn't have the authority to prevent continued operation of Vermont Yankee. The civil suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Burlington by subsidiaries ...

Race in America: 5 Take-Aways From the 2010 Census

The Census Bureau has released its final figures for the 2010 count, revealing new details about the makeup of the 308.7 million people in the United States and how they live. Here are five insights about America's racial mix that emerge from the report: 1. The geography of race The minority population, driven by a 43 percent increase in Hispanics, grew in all four regions of the country. But it grew most in the West. Nearly half of the West's population of 33.9 million is now minority. That is largely due to California, which also has the largest minority population of any state: 22.3 ...

Despite Protests, NRC Renews License for Vermont Nuclear Plant

Despite opposition by key state officials and worldwide fears over safety risks in the wake of Japan's nuclear crisis, the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission has granted a new 20-year operating license for the Vermont Yankee atomic power plant. Monday's approval, which capped a five-year review process, allows the plant to run from 2012 to 2032. But whether the plant will be open for another two decades remains to be seen. Vermont is the only state with authority to keep a plant from operating. When it bought the plant in 2002, Entergy agreed to obtain a certificate of public good from ...

Late-Winter Snow, Flooding Wallop New England, NY

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- A fierce storm late in a snow-heavy winter blanketed northern New England and upstate New York with up to 30 inches of snow Monday, while western Connecticut was deluged with so much rain that parts of homes and cars floated down a swollen river. In northern Vermont, drifting and blowing snow caused whiteout conditions with near-zero visibility, and a 10- to 12-mile section of Interstate 89 was closed for hours. Thirty inches of snow was reported in Jericho in northwestern Vermont at midday, the National Weather Service said, and the Burlington Airport saw its biggest March ...

New Storm Threatens to Bring More Heavy Snow, Rain and Flooding

A developing storm system has the potential to bring heavy snow, flooding rain and damaging thunderstorms -- including isolated tornadoes -- from the Plains to the Northeast over the next few days, even as many areas are recovering from wild weather spawned by a powerful storm over the weekend. The new storm system is beginning to develop in the Rockies today, and it will gather strength and moisture once it moves into the Plains later tonight through Wednesday. The weekend storm resulted in a deadly tornado in Louisiana, flooding in the Midwest and intense snowfall in the Northeast. AOL ...

Oakland Leads Pack of Battle-Tested 'Dogs

Oakland Leads Pack of Battle-Tested 'Dogs

After giving Illinois a mild scare and Michigan State a pretty severe one, Oakland was facing Tennessee Tuesday night. It marked the third time in a six-day span that the Golden Grizzlies were facing a ranked team. Two of them were in the Top 10. Two games were on the road while the other was at a "neutral" site -- though it was basically a duel-home game for both MSU and Oakland, being in Auburn Hills. The Grizzlies' 89-82 win over the Vols was hardly surprising to those who had paid attention to the recent string of games. And now No. 2 Ohio State is on the schedule next week. Plus, ...
