While a typical Nativity scene in most parts of the world usually includes figurines of baby Jesus, Joseph, Mary and their entourage of Wise Men and farm animals, folks in the Catalonia region of Spain add their own weird twist. If you look really closely at Christmas Nativities in Catalan cities like Barcelona or Tarragona, chances are you'll find a strange figurine of a man squatting and pooping somewhere in the manger. There's even a little ...

(Dec. 7) -- Suddenly, he's everywhere. Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont indicated Monday that he may seek to filibuster the new deal struck between President Barack Obama and Republicans over keeping the Bush tax cuts in place for the wealthiest Americans in exchange for a 13-month extension of unemployment benefits for those Americans out of work for longer than six months. Sanders, who has described himself as a "socialist," spoke to liberal MSNBC host Ed Schultz about what he views as a betrayal. Days earlier, on the floor of the Senate, Sanders delivered an ...
More senators are in the money than ever, according to a Roll Call report that found 54 lawmakers are worth at least $1 million. The combined minimum wealth of the entire chamber jumped to $680 million in 2009, more than four percent higher than the previous year, according to financial disclosures made this year. Several senators saw their wealth rise dramatically last year, including Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), whose minimum bottom line increased more than 400 percent to $370,000. The increase was due to a revaluation of his investment in his family farm, which rose to at least ...
(Sept. 23) -- A billi? That's right, a cool billion dollars was the minimum amount for securing a spot on this year's Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans (which unfortunately did not include the originator of the phrase "billi," rapper Jay-Z, although he did get the coveted spot on the magazine's cover, alongside Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett). Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates -- who along with 40 other billionaires has pledged to donate a significant portion of his fortune to charity via The Giving Pledge -- topped the annual list with a net worth of $54 billion. Buffett, who ...
(Sept. 22) -- That children born to well-off homes are more vulnerable to autism has been a topic of curiosity and research among experts for decades. But a new study of around half a million American children, published this week in PLoS One, adds some startling concrete numbers to that aspect of the ongoing investigation into autism's roots. By comparing relevant census information (including education levels and income) to the CDC's database of kids identified as suffering from autism or related health and behavioral problems, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison concluded ...
(Sept. 16) -- As the American economy shows some signs of pulling out of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, a host of dire statistics paints a less-than-rosy fiscal portrait for poor and middle-class citizens. Growing Poverty Rate The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that the poverty rate in America rose from 13.2 percent of the population to 14.3 percent. That means that 43.6 million people, a full one out of every seven U.S. citizens, now lives below the poverty line. For a family of four, that means an annual income of $21,954 or less. Growing Number of Uninsured In ...
Even in a bad economy it seems the rich get richer -- at least that was the case on Capitol Hill in 2009. The Hill newspaper, which annually reviews lawmakers' financial disclosure forms to compile its "wealthiest" list, said the top 50 richest members of Congress were worth nearly $1.4 billion last year -- $85.1 million more than the holdings of the elite group a year earlier. The richest? That would be Sen. John Kerry, (D-Mass.), who tops the list for the second year with a minimum net worth of $186.6 million, a boost of about $20 million from 2008, with much of it credited to his wife, ...
(June 10) -- You can't keep the rich down for long. Global wealth made a remarkable comeback in 2009, increasing by 11.5% to $111.5 trillion. That's according to a new report, The Boston Consulting Group's Global Wealth 2010 Report, released Thursday by Boston Consulting Group. The report breaks down wealth by region and by country, creating a geographic portrait of where the world's wealth is accumulating and at what rate. ...

Now we know that the slogans 'change you can believe in' and 'change we need' are code words for Barack Obama's ultimate goal: 'redistributive change.'
