Number of Americans Accepting Government Aid Soars

Number of Americans Accepting Government Aid Soars

One in six Americans are relying on government anti-poverty programs to help them weather the lingering recession, and that number is growing, USA Today reported Monday. A survey of data by the newspaper found that more than 50 million are on Medicaid, the federal-state health program aimed at low-income Americans. That's up 17 percent since the economic downturn began three years ago. "Virtually every Medicaid director in the country would say that their current enrollment is the highest on record," analyst Vernon Smith of Health Management Associates told USA Today. The federal food stamps ...

Israel Bank Chief Warns Ultra-Orthodox: Get a Job

JERUSALEM (July 21) -- God himself labored for six days before resting on the Sabbath -- but at least two-thirds of Israel's ultra-orthodox Jewish men aren't working at all, and it's becoming a major economic problem. The governor of Israel's central bank warned on Monday that the rising number of ultra-orthodox men who refuse to join the workforce could trigger "social conflict" unless they take a lesson from the Bible and get to work. Israel's robust economy, fueled by a generation of high-tech entrepreneurs, has helped the "Start-Up Nation" weather the global recession ahead of the U.S. ...

If Only We All Could Be as Broke as Queen Elizabeth

If Only We All Could Be as Broke as Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth, who happens to be visiting New York today, is "almost broke," according to several news outlets. That, of course, is complete hogwash. With her royal holdings, Elizabeth is worth about $466 million, which while not Warren Buffett-rich, still isn't too shabby. What's triggered the hyperbole is the queen's impending showdown with the British Treasury. The Treasury-funded Civil List is a budget that's supposed to cover roughly a third of the queen's expenses. But it's falling short. London's Sunday Times explains the byzantine funding issue: "For the past few years the Civil ...

Strip Bars Stripped From Welfare Distribution List

Strip Bars Stripped From Welfare Distribution List

(July 1) -- Welfare recipients in California will have fewer places to get relief, now that strip bars are being stripped off the list. Since 2007, it's been possible to cash the checks -- meant to feed and clothe needy families -- from ATMs at strip clubs across the state, including such well-known gentlemen's cabarets as Sam's Hofbrau, Seventh Veil and Star Strip. More than $12,000 from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program was dispensed from the start of 2007 to the end of 2009 at various California strip bars, casinos and state-licensed poker rooms, according to officials ...

States' Woes Could Weigh on National Recovery

States' Woes Could Weigh on National Recovery

LOS ANGELES (May 24) -- Facing a staggering $17 billion budget deficit and legal restrictions in trimming portions of California's work-for-welfare program, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed killing the state's welfare program entirely, saving $1.6 billion by ending cash benefits and child care support for some 1.4 million people. While that would make California the only state in the nation without a welfare-to-work program -- and gain the applause of small-government advocates -- Schwarzenegger's proposal seems likely to die in the Democratic-controlled Legislature. Especially after ...

Food Stamps Becomes Safety Net of Last Resort for Many

Almost one in five food stamp recipients reported having no other income at a time when help from federal cash assistance programs has become harder to get, making food stamps "the safety net of last resort" for many during the current recession, according to a New York Times study of 31 states. ...

Did ACORN Fall Far From the Tree?

By  Carl M. Cannon - Politics Daily
Did ACORN Fall Far From the Tree?

It's called the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now – although that's not its original name – and it was always meant to be known by its acronym, ACORN, the solid little nut that grows into a mighty oak. From the start, it was a polarizing group seen through very different lenses. To its supporters, ACORN was an inspiring progressive force that got liberals out of their limousines and into the streets where they belonged – into the nation's poorest neighborhoods where they could agitate and organize and pressure city governments to do right by people most in ...
