Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! When Brigham Young University basketball star Brandon Davies was dismissed from the team for reportedly violating the school honor code by having premarital sex, many observers were stunned. After all, having sex seems something of a rite of passage for American college students. The scandal has brought lots of attention to BYU's honor code, which also asks that students stay away from tea and coffee (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormon Church, frowns on caffeine) and adhere to strict clothing and grooming standards (no beards for men; only one piercing per ear for ...
The ring is back with its rightful owner. Fulfilling a promise made to Lt. Dan Choi, an Iraq War vet who was discharged from the Army under the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid returned Choi's West Point military academy graduation ring on the day of the presidential signing ceremony that repealed the restriction that kept gays and lesbians from serving openly. Choi had given Reid his ring in July and asked the senator to keep it until "don't ask, don't tell" was repealed. A hesitant Reid agreed. Here's a chronology of the ring drama that was put ...
(Dec. 15) -- Reported sexual assaults at the military's three academies increased dramatically in the 2009-2010 academic year, but those cases are likely only a fraction of the number of attacks that actually occur, the Pentagon said today. The 2009-2010 "Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies" found that reported assaults increased to 41, up from 25 in the 2008-2009 academic year. The 41 cases reported are probably just a fraction of the actual assaults, according to the report. "These survey results suggest that the 41 reports of sexual assault ...
(Oct. 25) -- Them's fightin' words. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is pulling no punches when it comes to her of what transpired at Sunday's debate between tea party candidate Joe Miller, write-in incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Democrat Scott McAdams. Taking to Facebook and Twitter, Palin accused Murkowski of attacking Miller, whom Palin has endorsed for Senate, over his military service. .bbpBox28718062527 {background:url(http://a1.twimg.com/profile_background_images/140652630/SPTwitter901.jpg) #58709b;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px ...
For the past two days, news from Washington has been dominated by a Rolling Stone article on General Stanley McChrystal that has yet to appear on newsstands. But media outlets received it in advance, and they published snippets and understandably focused on McChrystal and his staff's disparagement of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and other administration officials. The ensuing firestorm led the president to summon McChrystal back to Washington, and he may lose his job. Though the new issue won't hit newsstands until Friday, Rolling Stone has now made "The Runaway General," ...
Dan Choi entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1999, well aware that as a gay cadet serving under the "don't ask, don't tell" law, which bars gays from serving openly in the military, his enrollment carried certain risks. Still, he said, he was undeterred by the policy. But after a one-year tour of duty in Iraq in 2006, his attitude changed. First Lieutenant Choi (pictured below) started a relationship with his boyfriend and discovered that he wanted to share his personal life with his friends and family. "I realized that these are the things that my soldiers talk ...
President Barack Obama told graduating cadets at West Point Saturday the U.S. would fight on in its campaign to "disrupt, dismantle and to defeat" the terrorist network, but he said the country would go forward as "part of an international effort that is necessary and just." The president's emphasis on shaping an "international order" with old and new allies -- and his rejection of preemptive war -- sounded like a preview of a new national security strategy, which he is expected to announce next week. He warned the newly-minted second lieutenants, many of them headed to the battlefront and ...
WEST POINT, N.Y. (May 22) -- President Barack Obama on Saturday told graduating cadets eventually headed for war that their country needs allies standing with the U.S. in Afghanistan at a time when some nations are questioning their commitment to that fight and the costs of war. Obama also said that while the U.S. military is the "cornerstone of our national defense," those who wear America's uniform cannot bear that responsibility by themselves. "The burdens of this century cannot fall on American shoulders alone," the commander in chief said at the U.S. Military Academy, where in December ...
It started with a picture -- 2nd. Lt. Emily J.T. Perez. In her United States Military Academy photograph, she holds her feathered hat, grips her sword and smiles.Perez had a lot to smile about. She was the first minority female command sergeant in West Point history. And she was the first combat death from the class of 2005, also known as the class of 9/11. In 2006, a roadside bomb south of Baghdad killed her. ...
Sports talk and message boards have been abuzz about the Army reversing their decision to let West Point graduate, Caleb Campbell play safety for the Detroit Lions. The Detroit News "Behind the Scenes" columnists contend that it was pressure from the service academies that caused this change: The feeling at the United States Military Academy in West Point is that higherups and other branches of the service -- the Navy, in particular -- were jealous of the favorable publicity Campbell has generated for the Army since the Lions drafted him on the seventh round in April.... Campbell, who ...
