First Lady to Write Book About White House Garden

Michelle Obama is working on a book that's bound to be as dirty as it is wholesome. The first lady has received a book deal from Crown, a unit of Random House, to write about the kitchen garden she started at the White House as part of her efforts to promote healthy eating. The as-yet-untitled book will be published in April 2012. The book will describe how Obama was inspired to plant the first edible garden on the White House's South Lawn since Eleanor Roosevelt's World War II-era victory garden. She will also share some of her family's favorite healthy recipes. The first lady has made ...

Michelle Obama to Write Book on White House Garden, Healthy Eating

First Lady Michelle Obama will write a book about the White House garden she planted and her efforts to encourage healthy eating, Reuters reports. The news agency quoted the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House, as saying the as yet untitled book is to be published in April 2012 and that all proceeds will go to charity. Ground for the original 1,100-square-foot garden on the west side of the South Lawn was cleared on March 20, 2009 and first planted the following month. It was expanded by an additional 400 square feet last year. Also last year, the first lady launched the ...

Michelle Obama's Top 10 for 2010: 'Let's Move!,' Dancing in India, and That Spain Vacation

First Lady Michelle Obama's 2010 included a clearly defined high (the launch of her "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign) and a notable low (her controversial vacation at an expensive resort in Spain). The year also marked her first solo international travel, to Haiti and Mexico, and having the very cool experience of Paul McCartney singing "Michelle" to her at a White House concert. Here are Mrs. Obama's top 10 for 2010: Kickoff of "Let's Move!" On Feb. 2, Mrs. Obama formalized her healthy eating and exercise agenda into the "Let's Move!" campaign with an executive order from ...

Top Five Celebrity Activists: Lady Gaga and a Palin, Too

Star power goes a long way. Celebrities can often shed light, or make a big impact, on a cause or an issue in ways that even the best public relations campaign simply cannot. These days, they take to social media and television to get their points across on myriad issues affecting the world. Five celebrities who made a difference this year: Lady Gaga: The pop superstar dipped her toe into celebrity activism in 2009 when she appeared at the National Equality March in Washington. No Great Pumpkin but Plenty of Veggies From White House Garden Harvest

Surrounded by a field of pumpkins, radishes, eggplants and heirloom tomatoes, First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday harvested the White House garden alongside several acclaimed chefs and a dozen 5th graders from D.C.'s Tubman and Bancroft elementary schools. The "Fall 2010 Kitchen Garden Harvest" is a continuation of the first lady's signature "Let's Move!" initiative -- a program aimed at ending childhood obesity within a generation, focusing especially on exercise and healthy foods. Mrs. Obama was assisted in the harvesting by chefs from the prestigious Bocuse D'Or Foundation -- which ...

Michelle Obama Launches White House Garden's Second Year

After planting some rhubarb with students Wednesday at the spring launch of the White House garden, first lady Michelle Obama, hands dirty, gathered the children and commanded the seedlings, "Grow." "Grow" she said again, throwing her hands at the plants with the flourish of a magician. With the kids, she danced around the new plants when Sam Kass, an assistant White House chef and food initiative coordinator (one of the overseers of the garden), walked by. "Did a little growing dance here," Mrs. Obama told Kass. Kass, in a white chef's coat and jeans, joined the six kids and Mrs. Obama as ...

Michelle Obama Planting Expanded Spring Garden

First Lady Michelle Obama presides over the spring planting of a newly expanded White House kitchen garden on Wednesday afternoon. The expansion -- first revealed in Politics Daily last week -- will add several more rows of beds to the garden, originally planted last year. The expansion came at the request of Mrs. Obama. As happened last year, students from local schools will have a hand in tending to the vegetables throughout the growing season. Students from Bancroft in Washington and Hollin Meadows in nearby Alexandria, Va., will attend the planting event. Mrs. Obama visited the Virginia ...

Exclusive Video: White House Garden Survives, Thrives in Washington Winter

Despite a harsh Washington winter -- two blizzards and several feet of snow -- the recently harvested White House kitchen garden yielded a bounty of lettuce, spinach and a lot of turnips. "There was some concern about how our garden would do," said Sam Kass, an assistant White House chef and Food Initiative Coordinator in a video about the White House winter harvest, debuting exclusively on AOL's Politics Daily: "Nobody thought that the garden would survive," said Kass. It not only survived, it thrived, making First Lady Michelle Obama's signature project a four-season source of fresh ...

Iron Chef Special Used Ringers, Not Veggies From The White House Garden

The produce used on the Food Network's Jan. 3 Iron Chef of America two-hour special White House show was billed as being from the White House garden. But the show did not disclose that "stunt double vegetables" were used and not produce from the First Family's garden. The much ballyhooed show featured a cameo by First Lady Michelle Obama who invited the chefs to pick what they needed from the White House garden in the opening scenes. Mrs. Obama agreed to appear --and give the show access to the garden -- because the episode promoted her healthy eating themes and the garden, her signature ...

Obama White House Decorations: Traditional, With a Few Twists

The 50,000 guests at White House parties and tours in December saw the Obama family's holiday decorations were traditional but with a few unique touches. First Lady Michelle Obama said the 2009 theme for the decorations is "Reflect, Rejoice and Renew." "Christmas and the New Year has always been a time to reflect on our many blessings, to rejoice in the pleasure of spending time with our family and our friends, and to renew our commitment to one another and to the causes that we believe in," Mrs. Obama said. "And I wanted to continue that part of the tradition during our first holiday season ...
