Texans Say They Hope to Rebuild After Wildfires

POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE, Texas -- Their homes have been reduced to a gray heap of ashes, and acres of trees turned into blackened sticks. Yet many who live in a lakeside community ravaged by a massive Texas wildfire -- whether in a million-dollar mansion, a quaint lake house or a simple fishing cabin -- say they hope to rebuild and get back to watching the wildlife and whiling away the hours with loved ones. "Possum Kingdom is a state of mind," said Carolyn Bennis, whose dream house was destroyed in the fire that has charred nearly 150 square miles in three North Texas counties. "It's not ...

Wildfires Rage Across Texas, Scorch Over 1 Million Acres

MINERAL WELLS, Texas - A growing wildfire racing through parched fields and woods west of Fort Worth isn't likely to make it far enough to threaten the heavily populated metropolitan area, a state forestry official said Tuesday. The fire started Friday near Possum Kingdom Lake, 70 miles west of Fort Worth, and linked up with several smaller blazes. By Tuesday, it had burned nearly 150,000 acres, destroyed about 150 homes and a church in several communities and forced hundreds of residents to flee the area, Texas Forest Service spokesman Marq Webb said. White ash was falling from the sky ...

Official: Size of Texas Wildfire May Have Doubled

DALLAS -- A Texas official says a wildfire burning less than 100 miles from the Dallas-Fort Worth area could be twice as big as previous estimates. Texas Forest Service spokesman Marq Webb says the fire burning Tuesday near Possum Kingdom Lake may have grown to about 120,000 acres. It was previously estimated at 63,000 acres. The Possum Kingdom fire would be the fifth of at least 100,000 acres around Texas. The state is managing about 1,500 firefighters battling blazes that have consumed more than 1,000 square miles of parched Texas ranchland. The agency says at least 32 homes have been ...

Winds-Stoked Wildfires Threaten Texas Communities

AUSTIN, Texas - Strong winds and tinder-dry conditions presented more challenges Sunday for firefighters battling a spate of wildfires threatening communities across Texas, including a blaze in Austin that destroyed several homes and prompted an aerial water attack in the capital city. Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Public Safety disclosed that a volunteer firefighter who died Friday had been hit by a vehicle after fleeing a fire truck trapped in a wildfire-consumed pasture between Fort Worth and Abilene. Some Texans Return to Homes Charred by Wildfires

IVAN, Texas - With calmer winds giving firefighters a chance to get a handle on a few massive Texas wildfires Saturday, some residents returned to their homes - or what was left of them - in communities ravaged by the blazes. Gary Glasscock, who owns a 300-acre ranch near Possum Kingdom Lake, found his ranch house and most trees destroyed in a 30,000-acre fire that firefighters were able to contain a bit Saturday. In the popular recreation area about 120 miles west of Dallas, many resort homes were untouched by the flames while some mobile homes were left in ruins. At some houses, only the ...

Fires Rage, Drought Intensifies in Southern Plains, Southwest

Fires Rage, Drought Intensifies in Southern Plains, Southwest

While much of the country has been hit with flooding rain, dangerous thunderstorms and even late-season snow, just the opposite in the Southwest and Southern Plains has resulted in a decidedly different problem: extreme drought and wildfires. Extremely dry ground and vegetation, very low humidity and strong winds are fueling numerous fires in eastern New Mexico, western and northern Texas and Oklahoma. More than 360,000 acres of land have been burned nationally by ongoing fires this week, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. More than 900,000 acres have been burned so far this ...

Hot, Dry Weather Stokes Raging Texas Wildfires

FORT WORTH, Texas - Firefighters on Sunday continued battling out-of-control wildfires scorching nearly 400 square miles across the state, including a West Texas blaze that narrowly missed a historic frontier Army cavalry fort and one of the world's leading astronomical research facilities. A fast-moving wildfire had spread to more than 60,000 acres Sunday in Jeff Davis county and destroyed about 40 homes in Fort Davis before it raged north and east. The blaze that started Saturday night in Presidio County missed the McDonald Observatory, which instead was used as an evacuation shelter, said ...

Wildfire Burns More Than 61,000 Acres in Texas

ASPERMONT, Texas - A massive wildfire that has burned more than 61,000 acres in West Texas remains out of control. Alan Craft of the Texas Forest Service said Saturday the fire was "0 percent contained" and he expected it to continue spreading with dry, windy conditions in the area. About 100 members of the Texas Forest Service have been fighting fire by land and air, with help from local volunteer fire departments. Two unoccupied homes have been burned, and some livestock has been killed. So far, no towns have been threatened. Craft says pipe cutting sparked the fire on Wednesday. More ...

Wind Grounds Aircraft Fighting Colorado Wildfire

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Air tankers and ground crews battled a wind-whipped wildfire in the foothills west of Denver as officials warned that eastern Colorado's worst drought in nearly a decade makes that part of the state vulnerable to more burning. Two helicopters, two aerial tankers and 200 firefighters kept a 2-square-mile blaze from growing substantially Tuesday, officials said. The tankers dropped 7,000 pounds of fire retardant and the helicopters dropped 9,200 gallons of water before they were grounded when the wind picked up in the afternoon. The fire has been eating through grass, ...

Grass Fires Destroy Homes Near Oklahoma City

HARRAH, Okla. -- Authorities say grass fires have destroyed 39 homes in the Oklahoma City area and they are looking into reports that one may have been deliberately started. Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel said late Friday that 30 homes had been in destroyed in Harrah and nine homes were destroyed in neighboring Choctaw. Whetsel said the number could jump to 50 or more. He says investigators are looking into reports that someone burning trash may have unintentionally sparked the blaze in the Harrah area, and that another one farther to the south may have been set deliberately. The ...
