Experts: German Celebrity Polar Bear Knut Drowned

BERLIN -- Germany's celebrity polar bear Knut died from drowning after collapsing due to swelling of his brain and falling into his enclosure's pool, an expert said Friday. Pathologist Claudia Szentiks said a necropsy of the four-year-old bear who died suddenly two weeks ago showed he was suffering from encephalitis, an irritation and swelling of the brain that was likely brought on by an infection. Bizarre Bird Maimings in Huntington Beach: A Vast 'Right Wing' Conspiracy?

It's a weird, gruesome mystery that has all the local wildlife experts in "Surf City, USA" scratching their heads. In the past three weeks, almost 30 birds have been found in Huntington Beach, Calif., all with an almost identical signature injury: a devastatingly shattered right wing. Debbie McGuire, wildlife director at the well-respected and well-known Wetlands & Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach, where the birds have been brought when found by the public, says she's never seen anything quite like it. "It almost seems ritualistic, even cultish," she told AOL News. "In just about ...

Sickened Seals Washing Up on the Jersey Shore

Earlier today millions of dead fish washed up in Redondo Beach, Calif. But that's not the only sad marine life news to report. According to NBC Philadelphia, a higher-than-usual number of seals are washing up on New Jersey beaches. What's worse, many of the recently beached seals are starving, sick or infected with parasites, and experts aren't sure why it's happening. Seal sightings aren't that unusual at the Jersey shore, and it doesn't necessarily mean there's a widespread animal crisis. According to The New Jersey Star-Ledger, officials noticed a seal that had come ashore at Island Beach ...

Florida Panther Not Extinct, Eastern Cougar Is; Here's the Difference

How well do you know your cougars? On Wednesday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the eastern cougar (Puma concolor couguar) is extinct. A subspecies of the larger cougar family, the eastern cougar has been on the endangered species list since 1973. After a formal review, the Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that eastern cougars have likely been extinct since the 1930s. Cougar sightings in the eastern cougar's range, which stretches from Maine to Georgia, have been declared other types of cougar subspecies. The eastern cougar was considered a threat to livestock and was ...

Fireworks May Have Sent Ark. Birds Into a Tizzy

BEEBE, Ark. -- Celebratory fireworks likely sent thousands of discombobulated blackbirds into such a tizzy that they crashed into homes, cars and each other before plummeting to their deaths in central Arkansas, scientists say. Still, officials acknowledge it's unlikely they'll ever pinpoint a cause with certainty. So for the small town of Beebe, Ark., where New Year's revelers spent the holiday weekend cleaning up more than 3,000 dead red-winged blackbirds, The Mystery of Why the Birds Fell Out of the Sky remains unsolved. Some speculated Monday that a bout of bad weather was to blame. ...

More Than 1,000 Dead Birds Plunge From Sky in Arkansas

BEEBE, Ark. -- Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 blackbirds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday that it began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. the previous night. The birds fell over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area. Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe said the birds showed physical trauma, and she speculated that "the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail." The ...
