Venus Williams' Short Dress Causes a Stir: Her Top 5 Fashion Moments

Venus Williams' Short Dress Causes a Stir: Her Top 5 Fashion Moments

Tennis star Venus Williams has made it to the second round of the 2011 Australian Open, but it's her outfit -- not her game -- that has people talking. That's often been the case for Williams, who studied fashion design and has her own line, EleVen by Venus Williams. In the first round of this year's Australian Open, Williams wore a supershort blue dress (or was it a sort-of-long blue shirt?) that she designed, pairing it with cropped black undershorts. It's hardly the most controversial attire she's ever worn, and, in fact, might be considered somewhat tame in comparison to the outfits she ...

Federer and Nadal: Best Friends, Bitter Rivals

Federer and Nadal: Best Friends, Bitter Rivals

(Aug. 25) -- There's a certain kind of fan who resents modern professional athletes, not because of the vast amounts of money they make, but because they don't seem to hate their rivals. Take "The Decision" for example. Soon after LeBron James announced his decision to join up with fellow stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, retired players such as Magic Johnson said they would have never made such a move. Johnson said he spent his time thinking of how he could beat Larry Bird, not join forces with him. These days, NBA stars are more likely to embrace on the court than throw a malicious ...

How Realistic Is Roger Federer's 20 Grand Slams Goal?

How Realistic Is Roger Federer's 20 Grand Slams Goal?

(Aug. 13) -- Writing Roger Federer's tennis obituary is a crow-eating habit for sportswriters. Now, Federer himself, who is 29, has made it clear he finds the reports of his demise premature. The Federer-is-done trope began in earnest in 2007, after a spate of surprising hard-court losses by Federer to the likes of Guillermo Canas and other players outside the top 10. Then, in 2008 he lost in the finals of the the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic, which he followed up to losses to Rafael Nadal in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon (arguably the greatest tennis match ever played), ...

Serena Williams May Miss U.S. Open

The WTA announced Monday that Serena Williams is questionable for the U.S. Open, a potentially costly consequence of the foot injury she sustained just after winning Wimbledon. Williams needed surgery following an incident in which she cut her right foot in broken glass in a restaurant shortly after winning her fourth Wimbledon title. She will miss all three tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, including events in Istanbul, Cincinnati and Montreal. It was not initially believed that her injury was serious. "I am having a tough few days," Williams said on her Twitter account Monday. "My ...

Nadal Takes Out Berdych for Wimbledon Title

(July 4) -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal defeated No. 12-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in Sunday's Wimbledon final 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. It is Nadal's second career title at Wimbledon and his eighth overall Grand Slam. The Spaniard has now won the last two Wimbledon tournaments he has played in. Nadal was unable to defend his title at the All England Club in 2009 due to injury. Nadal was the aggressor and dictated play throughout the entire contest. Nadal forced Berdych into playing his own game during Sunday's final. Nadal offset Berdych's powerful groundstrokes by using his acclaimed ...

Serena Williams Wins Her 4th Wimbledon With a Rout

WIMBLEDON, England (July 3) -- Serena Williams has won her fourth Wimbledon title and 13th Grand Slam championship by sweeping Vera Zvonareva in straight sets in the women's final. The top-ranked and defending champion American beat the 12th-seeded Russian 6-3, 6-2 in 67 minutes Saturday to extend the Williams family dominance at the All England Club. Williams served nine aces, broke three times and never faced a break point. She finished the tournament without dropping a set. Williams added to the Wimbledon titles she won in 2002, 2003 and 2009. This was the first time she defeated someone ...

Federer's Wimbledon Run Comes to an End

Federer's Wimbledon Run Comes to an End

Roger Federer's Wimbledon came to an end today as he dropped in the quarterfinals to Tomas Berdych in four sets. Federer, the defending champion, has appeared in the past seven Wimbledon finals (winning six). But this time he was outplayed by Berdych, the tall, big-hitting Czech. It's no secret that Federer, history's top Grand Slam title holder with 16, is in the downward arc of his career -- even if his performance, for any other player, would still be considered exceptional. He won the Australian Open this year, but then he fell to another tall big-hitter, Robin Soderling, in the ...

Another Big Upset: Roger Federer Falls at Wimbledon

(June 30) -- Top-seeded and six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer lost to No. 12-seeded Tomas Berdych in quarterfinal play on Wednesday, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The 24-year-old Berdych dominated play with his powerful serve and forehand. Federer's groundstrokes were inconsistent throughout the match as Berdych frustrated the defending champion all match. Berdych had seven more winners than Federer -- including the match's final point -- and won nine more total points than Federer. Berdych's serve was only broken one time in the match. Federer's serve was uncharacteristically fallible in the ...

Venus Williams Upset in Wimbledon by Player Ranked 82nd

(June 29 ) -- For the second straight day, a heavily favored American was upset by a player ranked 82nd. Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria defeated No.2-seeded Venus Williams in straight sets on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-3. Pironkova dominated the five-time Wimbledon champion at Tuesday's All England Club quarterfinal. The Bulgarian constantly changed the pace on her shots and never allowed Venus to find any rhythm. Pironkova used a mix of spin on her slice and power to frustrate Venus throughout the contest. ...
