Murderer Wins Brazil's 'Miss Jail' Contest as Prison Pageants Gain Popularity

In a country known for its beauty -- both natural and human -- it appears that even Brazil's convicted killers are easy on the eye. A prison in Recife, a city in the state of Pernambuco, recently held its inaugural Miss Jail pageant to join a growing global list of contests for beauties behind bars. "It's flattering that people think I am pretty," said the winner of Miss Jail 2011, 19-year-old convicted murderer Rebecca Rhaysa Suelen Guedesin. Europics/CEN Rebecca Rhaysa Suelen Guedesin, 19, second from right, was voted Miss Jail in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. She's been ...

Report: Female Detainees in Egypt Forced to Take 'Virginity Tests'

Weeks after Egypt's vibrant, youth-led revolution, disturbing details are emerging about the treatment of some young female protesters briefly detained by Egyptian soldiers. Some of the women say they were strip-searched, photographed naked, beaten and forced to undergo "virginity tests" on threat of prostitution charges. At least 18 women were captured and held in military detention after army officers violently cleared Cairo's Tahrir Square on March 9, nearly a month after pro-democracy protesters ousted President Hosni Mubarak from power. After their release days later, several of them ...

200 Blank Pages: Book on What Men Think About Besides Sex Outsells 'Harry Potter,' 'Da Vinci Code'

It is perhaps no surprise that a book titled "What Every Man Thinks About Apart From Sex" is a best seller. It is also perhaps no surprise that such a book has recently outsold a Harry Potter title and "The Da Vinci Code" on Amazon.com. But what about the fact that the book contains only blank pages? The joke is on, well, all of us. London PR Sheridan Simove's book "What Every Man Thinks About Apart From Sex" has become a surprise best seller on Amazon.com. The book has 200 blank pages and is currently outselling two of the biggest books of all time. "I am fiercely proud that I ...

Women in Politics: Groups Aim to Increase the Numbers in 2012

With the 2012 elections in mind, several groups are gearing up to recruit and train women candidates after a mixed showing in 2010. The 2010 census means districts for the U.S. House of Representatives and for state legislatures are being redrawn, creating the potential for more open seats, more competitive races, and possibly more women in office. "We have to take advantage of that once-a-decade opportunity," said Mary Hughes, a California political strategist who is founder and director of the 2012 Project, a nonpartisan group trying to recruit women candidates. On the conservative side, ...

On International Women's Day, Twitter Targets Charlie Sheen

On International Women's Day, Twitter Targets Charlie Sheen

It's International Women's Day, and everyone's talking about ... Charlie Sheen. Sure, the tiger blood jokes are funny enough. But there's a growing backlash against the media frenzy that's been eager to document Sheen's every wild utterance and less eager to discuss his history of domestic violence charges. As Jezebel.com founding editor Anna Holmes wrote in a New York Times op-ed this weekend, "While his self-abuses are endlessly discussed, his abuse of women is barely broached." But on the very microblogging platform that gave Sheen a Guinness record, that started to change ...

Topless Feminists Protest 'Win a Wife' Competition

Topless Feminists Protest 'Win a Wife' Competition

A feminist group in Ukraine has protested a radio station competition to "win a wife" in the most eye-catching way possible -- by removing clothes. The Femen Movement is angered by a contest organized by a New Zealand radio station that offered a listener the opportunity to travel to Ukraine and meet women. Nine women protested in wintry Kiev by going topless and holding aloft banners that claimed "Ukraine is not a brothel" and "Welcome to hell." "Femen warns the lucky winner of the New Zealand competition that he can expect an unhappy ending in Ukraine," activist Olexandra Shevchenko ...

Diet Pepsi Skinny Cans Offend, Entice Women

Pepsi may need to can this marketing plan. The beverage company has unveiled its new "skinny" can for Fashion Week, a "taller, sassier" take on the classic soda can that the company calls a "celebration of beautiful, confident women." "Our slim, attractive new can is the perfect complement to today's most stylish looks, and we're excited to throw its coming-out party during the biggest celebration of innovative design in the world," PepsiCo chief marketing officer Jill Beraud said in a statement. But as some consumers embrace the new can, critics including the National Eating Disorders ...

Padded Underwear for Men Gives Booty More Bounce

For the many men who suffer from severe "flat butt," here's some uplifting news: One line of padded underwear specifically for guys is meant to give the illusion of a little more junk in the trunk. Are you sitting down? Good. The padded underpants in the spotlight are manufactured by a Canadian company appropriately dubbed BottomsUp, which operates under the motto: "Building a Better Bottom." The company offers all kinds of shape-enhancing undergarments for both women and men but places a special emphasis on the male derriere, which, frankly, could use a little ...

Kay Mills: Remembering a Trailblazing Journalist

As we prepare to celebrate Martin Luther King Day, we reflect on a time when minorities and women struggled for equality in the United States. King was the motivation and the spirit behind the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, but many others did their part in the continuing efforts to bring about equality for all in America. Kay Mills was one of those people. She was a friend of mine, and of hundreds of other women journalists for whom she helped blaze a trail. She died Thursday of a heart attack at age 69 in Santa Monica. She began her career as a journalist in the mid-1960s after ...
