Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Over the years a number of organizations have attempted to list the "worst countries for women," often to coincide with dates such as International Women's Day. One immediate challenge: What makes a country "worst for women"? Some researchers focus on humanitarian issues, others on educational attainment and literacy rates. Then, of course, there are health statistics to consider, as well as cultural biases and economic conditions. And no matter how accurate the underlying data are, numbers can only go so far in telling us what real women experience on a day-to-day basis. Those caveats ...
Pepsi may need to can this marketing plan. The beverage company has unveiled its new "skinny" can for Fashion Week, a "taller, sassier" take on the classic soda can that the company calls a "celebration of beautiful, confident women." "Our slim, attractive new can is the perfect complement to today's most stylish looks, and we're excited to throw its coming-out party during the biggest celebration of innovative design in the world," PepsiCo chief marketing officer Jill Beraud said in a statement. But as some consumers embrace the new can, critics including the National Eating Disorders ...
NEW YORK (Sept. 20) -- Ticktock, ticktock ... an inexorable beat began at 9 this morning in the heart of Times Square, a grim reminder of the hundreds of thousands of women who die each year from complications of childbirth. The digital billboard clock, set up by Amnesty International, will tick for three days while world leaders at the United Nations renew their commitments to fulfill the most basic needs of people around the world: food, water, basic health care and sanitation. (Sept. 18) – A California woman is suing her gynecologist for allegedly burning her name into her uterus. Ingrid Paulicivic, a 47-year-old hairdresser from Orange County, had her uterus removed as part of a hysterectomy operation in June 2009. While recovering from surgery, she noticed some burns on her legs and asked her doctor about them in a follow-up appointment. Her gynecologist, Dr. Red Alinsod, admitted that he'd used an electrocautery device to burn the name "Ingrid" into the woman's removed uterus, so as not to get it mixed up with other organs removed from other ...
UNITED NATIONS (Sept. 15) -- With 1,000 pregnant women dying every day, improving maternal and reproductive health is emerging as the central target of next week's U.N. summit, where President Barack Obama and 168 other heads of state are expected. Reducing maternal mortality is viewed as critical for meeting the U.N.'s Millennium Development Goals. Next week's summit will focus on those goals, which include halving the number of people living in abject poverty and improving child health worldwide. Ignacio Iribarren, AFP / Getty Images U.N. (Sept. 10) -- If your wife is bringing home more bacon, you might soon be cooking less of it. As in: breakfasts for one, dude. That's right: a 25-year study that tracked 2,500 married couples found that female breadwinners were 40 percent more likely to divorce their lower-earning husbands than women who raked in less than their partners. Reporting his findings in the October issue of Journal of Family Issues, sociologist Jay Teachman at Western Washington University noted that the distinction only becomes apparent when women earn 60 percent or more of the family's income. After that ...
(Aug. 11) -- New secrets of the female brain -- how it reacts to stress and monthly menstrual cramps -- have been revealed in two studies that harnessed brain scan science to better understand the distinct mechanisms by which hormones can affect a woman's mind. 1. Stress Differences Between the Sexes First up is a study out of the National Institutes of Mental Health that sought to determine why women are twice as likely as men to suffer from mood and anxiety conditions like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Brain scans on female and male rats revealed "striking gender ...
(July 14) -- Bad news for older women: Carrying a extra few pounds could mean something a lot worse than unflattering clothes. According to experts at Northwestern University, it could mean memory problems too. In a study published today in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, researchers took a group of 8,745 women aged 65-79 and gave them a 100-point memory test. The results showed that for every one-point increase in a woman's body mass index (BMI), her memory score dropped one point. You might think that donating $1.5 billion to global maternal and infant health would beget global cheering. Perhaps a small island named after you. Children given your name. Songs sung in your honor. But nothing is so easy and apolitical. Nothing, especially, in the world of women's health. Last week, Melinda Gates promised that the Gates Foundation -- known for its work on vaccines, HIV/AIDs and malaria -- would be striding off into the future with a separate but related arm of work focusing on reducing maternal and infant mortality -- two of the Millennium Development Goals. Pledging ...
Only one week after word leaked of Al and Tipper's plans to split, the Gore's eldest daughter is making news for her own looming divorce. The inconvenient timing is enough to leave Surge Desk asking: Is divorce contagious? All research points to "maybe" -- but the Gore family's double-split is likely much more complicated than the simple transmission of irreconcilable differences. People magazine is reporting that Karenna Gore Schiff, 36, and her husband, Drew, have been separated for several months. The couple, who've been married for 12 years, apparently participated in counseling before ...
