Zen in the Pen? Taxpayer-Funded Jailhouse Yoga on Shaky Legs

Is it a stretch for taxpayers to fund yoga classes for jail inmates? That's the question in New Mexico, where officials are considering budget cuts that might leave prisoners without a leg to balance on. Yoga, tae bo, tai chi and art therapy classes are on the chopping block at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque, where deputy county manager of public safety Tom Swisstack plans to make some cuts. Unorthodox Russian 'Guru' Behind Notorious Baby Yoga Video

The man behind the viral video showing a woman swinging a baby is a 74-year-old Russian with radical ideas about extreme water training, yoga and gymnastics for infants and children. Igor Charkovsky, called a "world-famous guru" by media outlets in the Middle East and Russia, has no formal medical training but told AOL News this week that his methods strengthen infants and lead to what he has called "super babies." 'Baby Yoga': How Young Is Too Young? [VIDEOS]

Would you swing a baby around by its limbs? Russian yoga instructor Lena Fokina would, and a video of her "baby yoga" routine has gone viral -- making many American parents cringe in horror. In the clip, Fokina takes a 2-week-old infant through exercises she calls "dynamic gymnastics." But is that claim true? According to pediatrician ...

Nikki Haley's Win: A Victory For Assimilation, Not Acceptance

Many conservatives and Christians are touting Nikki Haley's convincing win to be the GOP candidate for governor in South Carolina as proof, along with Bobby Jindal's successful run for Louisiana governor in 2007, that both Republicans and the South are going post-racial, and that these Indian-American pols show how open the party really is. "For the GOP, this is the best case scenario," said David Brody, White House correspondent for the Christian Broadcasting Network, Pat Robertson's Virginia-based news station. "You have a Christian, Indian-American woman representing your party in a state ...

Yoga Linked to Better Sleep for Cancer Survivors

(May 21) -- Cancer survivors who hit the yoga mat can reap significant health benefits, especially when it comes to rest and fighting fatigue, according to a new study of the alternative regimen that's been recommended by some doctors for years. Downward dogs and sun salutations aren't standard components of cancer care, but researchers at the University of Rochester have concluded that even twice-weekly yoga sessions can improve sleep quality, decrease dependency on medications and mitigate some of the fatigue that follows intensive chemotherapy. The research team divided 400 cancer ...
